Jill Hall’s home is simple—plenty of natural light, decor that does not clutter but rather provides a pop of color and texture, modern light fixtures and plants hanging on the wall to add life to a corner of the room. This simplicity was intentional.
“Life is so busy, and we seem to acquire so much stuff,” Hall says. “For me, the more we can simplify, the better. Our family is busy with four active boys, and my husband and I both work busy, full-time roles, so it helps to have a bright, light home.”
When faced with planning her home’s interior design, Hall recalled aesthetics from designers she loved when living in Los Angeles. She describes working with Molly from Brasstacks, a building design firm located in Kansas City, as a perfect fit.
“She understood my vision, and we clicked immediately when I sent her some images I had gathered,” she says. “I have always been drawn to white and light—more neutral tones, natural colors from earth as an inspiration.”
Her favorite space in the home is the kitchen, complete with a lot of bright light.
“I didn’t want the traditional upper style cabinets and layout,” she says. “I wanted to be able to see the boys playing outside while I was cooking in the kitchen—there is a spot right behind the sink where you can find me quite often.”
The open concept they achieved provides ample room for their family, including four boys ages 4-10, to spend time together and apart.
“Two of the boys will often be at the dining room table working on a puzzle and then another at the island doing homework and then another in the living room lounging,” she says.
Each room is complete with accessories, like a patterned pillow, wooden tapers, an ottoman or hanging artwork with bold colors. Because of the neutral background, established by white walls and a mostly muted color scheme, Hall is free to change out these accessories from season to season. In their bedroom, Hall kept white bedding (a style choice she has maintained since college) and will change something simple, like the pillows, to create a shift in the space.
“I just love the crisp, clean look,” she says. “I will change out the lumbar pillow and blankets to change out the look easily. Simple, and then add the spark.”
Hall doesn’t believe that neutral equates to boring, and she finds that a neutral background can allow accessories to shine brighter.
“I am drawn to little details that can make a big impact—many times that will be layering,” she says. “I also wanted to accomplish a space where we can be as a family—open, bright and allow for our boys to grow up and enjoy their time at home.”
