Erica Krzykowski and design assistant, Angela Wedekind are the masterminds and the creative forces behind Prairie Home Designs. With their attention to detail, eye for innovative design and limitless creativity, this duo packs a powerful punch to transform any space. Principal designer Krzykowski makes it her personal mission to make each client’s space feel beautiful and reflect their unique and personal style.
They are sharing two outdoor patio and front door looks with us to inspire us as we freshen up our outdoor living spaces this spring. "We chose to use the same sectional as the foundation to show how changing the small things can make a huge difference," explains Krzykowski.
Modern
The first look is monochromatic and modern. Simple is best when creating this vibe. The key is to not use too many different colors, but layer in texture for an inviting atmosphere. They used black and white as their palette and added interest and coziness with the drapery panels, patterned rug, comfy pillows and a throw for chilly evenings. Adding an inviting chair to curl up with a book and including a tray for entertaining has this space ready for when the weather improves and neighbors come out, so we can all get reacquainted!
The modern front door incorporates a runner layered with two mats to create interest. "Think creatively about what kind of rugs your front space might need," Krzykowski says. "A runner was used here because of the double doors, but you might want a 30x60 rug with an individual mat on it for a single entry door." Pro tip: When it comes to modern planters, bigger is better, so pick something that will fill your space well.

Bohemian
The second look is colorful and Bohemian. Fun, vibrant colors and lots of woven items were used for this whimsical look. "We started with a tall egg chair as a statement piece to establish the look and added battery powered hanging lanterns for interest up high," Wedekind says. "Don't forget about the space above your head. It's a great place to make an impact." Bring the indoors out with this look. Think about what you would want inside your house and find a way to bring it out. Included here in this look are poufs for kids to sit on to play games, and an umbrella stand for guests who visit on rainy days. There is also a boot tray for days when the kids have been out playing in the mud.
At the front door in this look, they include lots of color and pattern. The runner is a buffalo check, and the mats are floral to add interest. Layer here and be daring.
