I honestly think that today’s society and chaotic lifestyles are the reason this minimalistic home trend has taken on quick popularity. Though I’m on board with 90 percent of it, there is definitely an area that I think this is negatively affecting the preservation of family heirlooms.

What's the Hold Up?
Truth be told, it’s probably easier to skip out on the incorporation of heirlooms but lets face it, when has the road less traveled turned out better in the end?
Does either 'I don’t have room for this' or 'it doesn’t match my other décor' sound familiar? Well it should, because they are the most common responses when turning down those old family heirlooms. But guess what? I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to say yes! When these pieces are carefully curated, they add depth, history and visual interest to your home.
3 Easy Steps to Get Started
- Say yes! If you like it or it brings back great memories, then you’ll likely be able to find a space for it.
- Start small. Blending old with new, or traditional with modern, is easier than you think! All you have to do is start small. For example, try updating the frame of the photo or painting to one that better suites your taste. Adding something like this to a bookcase or even layering it on top of one of our cool modern prints adds visual interest! In fact, the difference in eras will make your art stand out even more!
- Slow and steady wins the race. Don’t feel like you have to put everything out at once. Maybe just rotate a few items out every couple of months. I like to bring out my grandmother's vase around the holidays because that’s when I remember seeing it at her house. It’s special to me and I make a point to always fill it with flowers when it’s on display.
Not only will it feel nice to see little reminders of family past times, but it will be really fun to learn the stories behind them.
