There's nothing better than cuddling up with a good book on a cold day. And books can certainly make meaningful, and fun holiday gifts. These selections were written by local authors. Enjoy!
Rachel Browdy, a St. Louis area high school history teacher, wife, mother of three, and author, has written a new novel for young adults called Journey Through the Advent Calendar that brings the elements of the Advent season to life in a fun and epic way.
The story begins in modern-day United States, but the main character, Zach, is quickly transported into the world within his Advent Calendar, Burra Din, a magical world filled with hidden dangers and wondrous people and creatures.
Rachel says she was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and all the great tales of Christmas, as well as by her own family’s love for Christmas, her Catholic background and education, as well as her desire to bring back the passion and excitement of age-old lessons and stories.
The book is available in bookstores and JourneyThroughTheAdventCalendar.com.
Join an orphaned, 14-year-old boy, who feels lost and lonely, and enters a magical world desperate for a hero.
History comes alive in Historic Saint Charles, and according to longtime resident, history enthusiast, and author Valerie Battle Kienzle, the best way to experience Main Street and nearby areas is on foot. So, grab a pair of comfortable walking shoes, slip St. Charles Walking Tour into your backpack or purse, and prepare to be wowed.
Valerie’s new book includes four easy walks, plus several suggested short side trips. Each walk includes a detailed map with points of interest, accompanied by brief historical information and photographs. See places seen by explorers Lewis and Clark prior to their historic Corps of Discovery trip and try to imagine what it was like to travel west by wagon on the Boone’s Lick Trail. Whether you’re a local resident, history buff, or a visitor, this book will help you see St. Charles from a whole new angle…and it makes for a great holiday gift! It can be found at Main Street Books, and other bookstores.
Whether this is your first visit to Saint Charles, or you're a local resident, you'll learn new things and interesting history along the route of these four walking tours.
