Western Mass Demolition

Meeting your demolition and recycling needs

When it has to go, Western Mass Demolition is the go-to business for building demolition. Founded by Dale Unsderfer, this multi-faceted company knocks  down structures everywhere throughout the Western Massachusetts region. From huge corporations to residential homes, W.M.D.C. not only knocks down and removes structures and moves large equipment, but they also remove asbestos as well as do interior and demolition for homes and businesses. They even demolish outdated swimming pools and provide dumpsters for homeowners who are doing clean outs and downsizing. Here, Dale answers some of our questions about the company and what they do.

How did you get into the demolition business?

It all started when I was in High School at Westfield Vocational. One day during class, as I looked out the window, a local demolition company was wrecking a structure across the street. It's like something sparked inside of me, and from that moment on, I knew that was what I wanted to do. However, it wasn't until I was 22 that I stepped into the demolition world. I worked and gained experience for four years with other companies before starting my own in 2013.

What is the largest structure you’ve demolished?

The tallest structure, at five stories high, was the old W.H. Miner Chocolate Factory (aka: Handy Chocolate Company) at 1616 Berkshire Ave in Springfield. The largest structure in terms of square footage was the 120,000 square-foot Columbia gas of Massachusetts building at 2025 Roosevelt Ave. in Springfield.

What are the top reasons for demolishing a building?

Abandoned and/or condemned, fire, or making way for new construction

Are there buildings you ever feel badly about having to demolish?

Yes, churches and historic landmarks.

What type of equipment is used in demolitions?

Every job is different and requires different equipment. Some of our most used equipment, believe it or not, is a push broom and good old hard work. Our biggest piece of equipment is our "Volvo 380 High Reach Excavator" standing at 80 feet high.

How do you determine what elements of a building can be reused, recycled, or salvaged?

We call on our business partners that specialize in the work at hand and have them come in and assess the building prior to demolition. Mass Obtain is our sister business.  We partner with Nick Burns who runs a 10,000 square-foot warehouse in Palmer, where you can find our antique and vintage finds, including the most sought-after items - vintage hardware, doors, and corbels. www.mobsalvage.com

Do you have a favorite quote that about your philosophy of life and/or work?
"In God We Trust." This quote is our anchor. We placed this quote on all our trucks and equipment to remind us to stay trusting God even when times are tough. It has helped us to keep peace and make bold moves in business and in life that have always paid off.
