Scents of the Season

More than Just a Beautiful Fragrance

When we became a foster to adopt family, it meant growing in a million and one ways. Through the process, we learned about therapeutic parenting, trauma, and letting the little things go. We learned that a big piece of caring for these hurting kids is creating an environment that is safe, nurturing, and in many cases, makes space for them to do the hard work of grieving. So, when we began learning about what a 'toxin-free' environment was, it was no time at all before we turned to essential oils to help replace many everyday household products containing ingredients with a significant 'yuck' factor. Enter Young Living, a company that treats the earth and people on it with so much respect and care that we knew we could trust their essential oils to bring not only beautiful scents into our home but also the healing power of plants.

In our home, we use oils to roll on our skin topically; we diffuse them into the air we breathe, and we consume them in our cooking and synergistically in our vitamins. They have literally benefited every area of our home. We reach for oils when feelings get too big, when sensitive skin needs care, when sleep is disrupted and when immune systems need support. The kids even have their own roller bottles, each created with emotional supporting oils and decorated with stickers. We love stickers! As an often overwhelmed family, having these tools has been an incredible blessing—a true gift to these precious bodies, souls and minds. Even our littlest family member breathes easier when we roll diluted oils over his back at bedtime to help him rest well.

If you have wondered how to bring these drops of plant magic into your home, we got you. Here is your 'how-to' guide for Seasonal Scents and what to look for when you shop for essential oils.

When buying essential oils, you want to know with confidence that the oil is pure from seed to seal. What does that mean? It means only buying from a company that discloses their practices from the soil in which the seeds grow to the way they harvest; hand weeded vs. applied pesticides. Sustainably harvested is essential, too, as over-harvesting of treasures like frankincense can negatively impact the farmers’ future livelihood that grow them. It is also important to know how they distill. Single steam distilled vs. multiple or chemical distillations make a big difference in how nature comes to you in a bottle (the seal.) When a company willingly provides information about their farmers, their practices and their laboratory testing, you are on to something good.

Those little bottles might seem expensive, but a little goes a long way with a well-made oil. Did you know that there is the equivalent of 28 cups of peppermint tea in 1 drop of peppermint essential oil? Pretty cool and pretty potent. That's why a couple of drops is all you will need to enjoy the recipes below.

Diffusing using pure essential oils means safely adding beautiful aromas to your space while also benefiting our bodies. Just remember less is more. Only pure will do and give kids and pets space to avoid the diffuser should they need to.

Here are a few of our favorite, family-friendly Christmas blends:

Christmas Spirit = 2 drops Cinnamon + 2 drops orange + 3 drops blue spruce

Warm Cider = 3 drops orange + 1 drop nutmeg + 2 drops cinnamon + 1 drop clove

Candy Cane = 4 drops peppermint + 2 drops cinnamon +1 drops orange

O Christmas Tree = 3 drops pine + 2 drops bergamot + 1 drops rosemary + 1 drop blue spruce

  • Pro Tip: Don't have a diffuser yet? Try a few drops on a cotton ball and attach it with a clothespin to the vent. Or, add it to distilled water in a spritz bottle, and give a spray to the room you need to freshen up.
  • Pro Tip: Trying to support sensitive skin? Ditch and switch from traditional dryer sheets to wool dryer balls, adding a few drops of your favorite eo to each load.
  • Pro Tip: Feeling overwhelmed during the busyness of the season? Place one drop of orange oil in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together to warm the oil up, cup your nose, and take several deep breaths. Remind yourself you can do this, and you are wonderful!
