Reflecting on Thanksgiving

"For all that has been, Thanks.  To all that shall be, Yes. " - Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary-General of the United Nations

Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday, like all cultural institutions is evolving over time. Traditionally a family holiday, today people share their Thanksgiving with friends, or chosen-family. Originally centered around a feast featuring turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, current-day celebrations accommodate vegan sensibilities and incorporate shopping or watching a football game. With a contemporary gaze, we can examine historical injustice and participate in creating a more equitable and compassionate social structure.

The major religions, most spiritual traditions, and the field of psychology place a great value on invoking gratitude for emotional stability, health and well-being. Perhaps you will be inspired this Thanksgiving to adopt a daily or weekly practice of reflecting on the Providential gifts and graces in your life. Such reflection changes us and in turn, the world.
