Open, accents, livable and uniquely showstopping

This is what JoLynn Tarantino and her family have created in their newly remodeled dreamy basement space.

Custom features liven this basement, which boasts a moody look and lounge feel. This active family desired a space they would be proud of and wish to entertain in. It is welcoming to their four children and adults as well.

“I envisioned the layout and finishes myself,” JoLynn says. “I love designing and being creative, so this was a project I was excited to do! Since it was meant to be a fun entertaining space I wanted to play with different textures and features. For example, in the powder room we did a full, floor-to-ceiling accent wall in a warm black subway tile we installed in a pattern to showcase more detail. I wanted the vanity in there to be an elevated style as well, so we did a floating vanity with reeded doors to add texture and a modern flair. The entertainment spaces are not large spaces, so we filled them with usable features. For example, the bar! We wanted a large bar where several people could sit comfortably so we kept it very clean and simple with a waterfall edge to really stay consistent with the modern feel and elongate the room. To give the visual appeal of height we continued the countertops as the backsplash and took the glass cabinets to the ceiling. We tied the glass doors in with the full-size glass front beverage fridge and our glass accent wall in the office.”

Cabinet-front appliances make the bar appear larger and disguise the full kitchen. The custom-made built-in seating at the base of the curved staircase is a functional enclave.

The custom-made iron/glass wall is a truly outstanding feature, which encloses a bonus room. The upstairs main floor is open, so they wanted each basement space to have its own purpose, yet still mirror the open concept. The bonus room can be used as an office, exercise room or guest bedroom. The widened hallway allows a view of this feature.

“A lot of thought went into this layout, and our 14-year-old daughter enjoys her incredible bedroom and bathroom which features floor-to-ceiling green tile with gold accents. She has a walk-in closet and her own washer and dryer!” she smiles. “We had some fun with color and used that amazing green on her built-ins that now double as a feature wall and functional space as a dresser for storing her clothes. Everyone says it’s like she has her own college dorm down there!”
