This past August, Ricky Kuiters a Park Ridge local took on an extraordinary challenge: running 100 miles through picturesque New Jersey to raise awareness for mental health. Starting in Montclair and winding through Hewitt, Nyack, and Westwood, his journey was not just a test of endurance but a powerful message of hope and resilience.
Kuiters' motivation stems from his own struggles with mental health. Three years ago, he found himself in a dark place, feeling as if there were no way out. “I didn’t see myself coming out of it,” he recalls. But through perseverance and support, he emerged stronger and determined to help others grappling with similar feelings.
Each mile of Kuiters' run symbolized a step toward healing—not just for him, but for anyone who has ever felt lost. As he ran, he carried the weight of his past, reflecting on the importance of role models who illuminate the path forward. “Sometimes, you just need to see someone else make it,” he said.
Kuiters' mantra was simple yet profound: “Do the thing unprepared.” He embraced the idea that starting something difficult without knowing every obstacle can lead to growth and inspiration. Each mile he conquered was a testament to resilience and a chance to show others that recovery is always within reach.
As he crossed the finish line in Montclair, Kuiters raised his arms in triumph. He had done it. The journey that started with friends and family saw him finish alone in the early hours of the day. They were always there to support him, but he had to take the strides of change himself. “The comeback is always possible!” he declared, a reminder to everyone that hope is never out of reach.
Kuiters' journey not only raised vital funds for the Mental Health Association but also sparked important conversations about mental health in the community. His story is a powerful reminder that, in our darkest moments, we can find the strength to shine a light for ourselves and others.
For those inspired by Ricky's journey, donations can be made in his honor at MHAinspire.org/donate. Join the movement and be a part of the conversation—because every step toward awareness is a step toward healing.
