Some of you may know about this hidden gem located just a couple hours from our home town, but for those of you who don't, here's a bit about this vibrant lake. It's a short 148-mile drive South from Franklin and a thrilling location for a weekend getaway, with year-round activities from bird watching to hiking.
DAY 1
There are approximately 21,000 acres and 500 miles of shoreline to enjoy, and Smith Lake is ranked one of the cleanest lakes in the United States. This makes it a great place to cool off during the summer months and to take in spectacular views in the winter months. Smith Lake also offers boat rentals and multiple lakeside restaurants with public docking. This vibrant lake is ideal for many recreational activities such as fishing (over 70 species of fish!), wake surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding or just soaking up some sun.
If you want to travel the area around the lake, the Natural Bridge of Alabama is a compelling place to explore. This 148-foot sandstone bridge stands 60 feet above various footpaths. Created by thousands of years of wind, this bridge is the longest natural bridge in the southeast.
The Smith Lake Dam is another pit stop. It's one of the largest rock-filled dams in the eastern United States. The dam is a popular fishing spot among locals, and there are white sandy beaches for sunbathing or just relaxing.
NIGHT 1
After a bike ride on one of the many miles of both paved and natural bike trails, stop for a bite to eat at Goldigger's Bar & Grill at the Lakeshore Marina. Drink specials, live entertainment and even karaoke is a fun way to round out your Smith Lake stay.
Finally, retreat to your rental. If you're looking to purchase, weekend homes on Smith Lake start in the mid-$300s and range up to as high as $2.3 million. But if purchasing isn't in the cards, there are a number of rentals available for a 24-48 hour weekend getaway.
