From a photographer's perspective, define "style"?
Style is what makes a photograph. Whether it's the subject’s personal style, the styling that a photographer adds to an image to give it life, or the photographer’s shooting style, "style" plays a large role in photography.
What drew you to fashion photography?
As a teenager, I was drawn to fashion photography when I flipped through the pages of Vogue. I was inspired by the images on the covers and in the editorials. I would study each image looking closely at the eyes to see what type of light was used. I could see the reflection of the light modifier in the eyes; typically a beauty dish, soft box or window light. It was a way for me to learn how the image was created.
How does being surrounded by style in your field help cultivate creativity?
Style is a huge influence on my work. Not just for my fashion photography, but for my fine art photography, too. The foundation for many of my fine art self-portraits is the style of clothing. The shape, color or pattern of a dress can be enough to spark inspiration for a whole shoot.
