Long before The Shave Bar became a staple in Hillsdale, it started with a 13-year-old and a pair of clippers.
“I started cutting hair from home,” says owner Evan Vidal. “By 17, I was working in my first shop. By the time I graduated high school, I knew I found my calling.”
That early certainty turned into a relentless pursuit. Evan enrolled in cosmetology school right after graduation, refining his craft while building a loyal clientele. By age 30, the opportunity came to open his own shop, and he took it. What followed was not just the launch of a business, but the beginning of something much deeper.
Now, 10 years later, The Shave Bar stands as one of the Pascack Valley’s most trusted names in men’s grooming.
Built on Consistency, Not Hype
From the beginning, Evan’s vision was clear: consistency over trends
“I wanted to build a shop people could count on,” he says. “Consistent quality, the right atmosphere, and making sure every client felt taken care of.”
That mindset shaped everything, from the service menu to the tone of the space. It was never about becoming the biggest barbershop around. It was about becoming the best at what they do, one client at a time.
And that approach worked.
A decade in, The Shave Bar has grown into a respected brand with a reputation rooted in trust. For Evan, the milestone is both humbling and validating.
“It reminds me of the commitment it took to get here,” he says. “The long days, the risks. But it also shows we built something the right way.”
More Than Just a Haircut
Step inside The Shave Bar and it is immediately clear this is not just a transactional experience. It is a place where routine meets connection.
Clients are greeted with a welcoming, laid-back energy. TVs at every station stream live sports. Music fills the room. Conversations flow easily between barbers and clients, often picking up right where they left off weeks before.
“It’s always been about more than just the haircut,” Evan explains. “You get to know your clients, their jobs, their families, what’s going on in their lives.”
That consistency builds something rare: real relationships. Over time, clients do not just return for the service, they return for the familiarity.
Where Tradition Meets Today
There is a noticeable respect for tradition woven into every service at The Shave Bar. Classic techniques form the foundation, from precise scissor work to the art of the hot towel shave, a signature offering that brings a touch of luxury to the everyday routine.
But the shop does not live in the past.
“With a strong foundation and an eye for modern styles, we can tailor any look,” says Evan.
From timeless cuts to today’s trends, the focus remains the same: clean, well-executed grooming that fits the individual. Because trends may come and go, but confidence never goes out of style.
Rooted in the Pascack Valley
Choosing Hillsdale was not accidental. Evan had already spent years working throughout the Pascack Valley, building relationships and understanding the community.
“When I walked into this location, it just felt like home,” he says.
That connection has only deepened over time. The community’s loyalty and support have played a major role in the shop’s success, and it is something Evan does not take lightly.
“We’re honored to be part of this area. I wouldn’t want to own a shop anywhere else.”
A Family Effort
Behind the scenes, The Shave Bar is very much a partnership. Evan’s wife, Brittney, brings her own background in cosmetology and plays a key role in shaping the business.
“Her support and knowledge have been instrumental,” he says.
Together, they have built more than a shop. They have created a space where barbers can grow their careers, refine their skills, and build their own loyal followings. Watching that growth, Evan says, is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
The Simple Secret to Looking Sharp
After 10 years, Evan’s advice for men looking to elevate their grooming routine is not complicated.
“Keep it simple,” he says. “Find a barber you trust and stay consistent.”
It is about the details, regular cuts, a maintained beard, a clean neckline. Small things done well, over time.
Because in the end, the goal is straightforward.
“A great haircut is a happy customer,” Evan says. “Nothing else matters.”
