A Day on the Water

Celebrating the Orange Beach Police Department - Marine Division and the Billfish Classic

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to join the Orange Beach Police Department’s Marine Division as they kicked off the 2025 Orange Beach Billfish Classic. The experience was nothing short of eye-opening, revealing the dedication, humility, and unique spirit of these officers who patrol our beautiful waters. Nestled along the intercoastal waterway, these gentlemen head out every day with a singular mission: to keep our boaters, beaches, and communities safe.

When you think of police officers, the image that comes to mind often involves urban settings, traffic stops, or responding to emergencies. But the officers of the Marine Division embody a different kind of policing, one that is closely tied to the natural beauty of our area. Each officer has a personal story—many were drawn to the South by its famous hospitality and charm. Whether they come from backgrounds in law enforcement in other states, military service, or even national park rangers, these men embraced the opportunity to serve and protect in a way that directly connects them to the community they love.

Stepping onto their boat and heading out into the vastness of the water felt surreal. The gentle ocean waves danced in the distance, and the excitement of the Billfish Classic filled the air. It was beautiful to watch the participants and their supporters come together, embodying the camaraderie and friendship that is so integral to this annual tradition. For many locals, the Billfish Classic is not just a fishing tournament; it’s a celebration of the lifestyle we cherish—enjoying the sun, sand, and the natural habitat that makes this place home to so many.

The Orange Beach Billfish Classic is renowned for its festive atmosphere, bringing together fishing enthusiasts from all over. It’s an event that combines competition with fun, fostering friendships and a sense of community. The thrill of the catch is matched only by the shared experiences and stories exchanged among participants. Beyond the excitement on the water, the tournament also raises funds for various charitable causes, helping those in need and supporting local initiatives. This spirit of giving back is what makes the Billfish Classic so special, as it contributes to the greater good of the community while celebrating our rich maritime culture.

As we cruised through the water, I was reminded of the vital role these officers play in not just protecting human life but also preserving the delicate ecosystems that surround us. The Orange Beach Police Department is equipped with advanced technology and resources, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors alike. Their efforts extend beyond policing; they collaborate with conservatory groups and environmental organizations to maintain the beauty and health of our natural habitats.

During our time on the water, I asked the officers about the most common issues they encounter while patrolling. Their answer was unanimous: most people simply don’t know the boating laws and safety regulations. Many are unaware of the importance of no-wake zones or the reasons certain areas are designated as off-limits to boats. As they explained this, a pod of dolphins gracefully swam by, a perfect reminder of the enchanting wildlife we share these waters with.

The officers are not just enforcing rules; they are educating the public about the importance of preserving our environment for the sea turtles that come to nest, the unique bird species, and the diverse aquatic life found in these waters. Their commitment to protecting our natural habitat is as strong as their dedication to the people they serve.

What struck me most about these officers is that they are family men, friends, and active members of the community. Their passion for protecting and serving extends to their personal lives, where they invest time in their families and engage with their neighbors. They truly embody the spirit of community policing, forging connections that go beyond their duties as law enforcement officers. Each day, they suit up not just to perform a job but to uphold a mission that resonates deeply within them.

Wrapping up our day on the water, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the Orange Beach Police Department - Marine Division. Their dedication to our community, both on land and water, is a testament to their character and commitment. With every wave they navigate and every safety measure they enforce, these officers remind us of the beauty of our surroundings and the importance of preserving them for future generations.

Special thanks to the Orange Beach Police Department - Marine Division for their unwavering commitment to keeping our community safe and for allowing me to share in their mission. Together, they are not just protecting our waters; they are nurturing a community bound by a shared love for our home and a united passion for protecting and serving all who call this place home.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to officers Caleb Winifield, Stephen Centrone, and Brian Kincaid. These gentlemen not only protect and serve but spend their time educating others on the importance of boater safety, keeping our islands safe, secure, and fun for everyone to enjoy.
