The allure of thrift store shopping has surged in popularity in recent years, its appeal extending beyond mere affordability. Attracting a diverse demographic from budget-conscious students and young people just starting out, to eco-conscious trend-setters, thrift stores continue to rise to the top as shopping destinations and hubs for creativity and sustainable living.
A multitude of thrift and vintage shops can be found right here in Bend. Each with a slightly different focus offering a treasure trove of vintage clothing, quirky accessories and an eclectic mix of household items, many from days gone by.
One such shop, which opened in early 2024, is Bend Village Merchant. According to owner Amber Hoover, her motto and mission is “Reviving the past, living in the present, and sustaining the future through consignment and second hand.”
Together with her partner, Cody Hummel, owner of Applied Junk Removal, Hoover is taking her business a step further with a new endeavor, Bend Village Estate Services. Hoover and Hummel will be helping clients delve into the often-monumental task of sorting through their lifetime of belongings for items to sell, donate or dispose of in an environmentally conscious way.
“We are building relationships and hopefully serving the community in many ways,” says Hoover, who regularly donates to local nonprofits such as Furnish Hope and Habitat for Humanity.
Hoover shares that there is an atmosphere of support among the shop owners in Bend. “We have a sense of community here… and we all aim to offer a unique shopping experience that is good for the environment, the community and the soul.”
