First Responder of the Month: Meet Karla Butler

A Journey from Zookeeper to Senior Animal Control Officer

What little girl doesn’t dream of being a zookeeper? For Karla Butler, this childhood fantasy was a lifelong inspiration. Growing up in the sun-soaked landscapes of California, Karla's love for animals blossomed early, steering her ambitions towards a career in the animal kingdom. Karla's passion for animals was evident from a young age, shaping her educational and professional goals.

Karla's path began with a specialized education from Moorepark College with an emphasis in animal training, zookeeping, and wildlife education. She started her career at the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens in Palm Desert, California, where she gained valuable experience and knowledge. Her skills and dedication led her to a prestigious position at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Eventually, she returned to the Living Desert Zoo, where she went back to work with the giraffes as part of wildlife programs, and she also helped develop the new reptile show.

Life took an unexpected turn when Karla’s husband’s career brought their family to Texas. Embracing this new chapter, Karla took a break from her professional life to raise their children, putting her professional aspirations on hold. During this time, Karla explored a new passion for writing, contributing to a sports blog, and then moving on to write and publish a children's book. Despite these new endeavors, her love for animals remained strong.

Feeling unfulfilled in her professional life, Karla decided it was time to return to her lifelong passion of working with animals. The City of Allen’s animal control department became her new professional home seven and a half years ago. Transitioning from zookeeping to animal control was not something she had anticipated, but it turned out to be a deeply fulfilling role. As a newly promoted Senior Animal Control Officer, Karla finds herself in a position that, while different from her days at the zoo, is equally rewarding.

Karla Butler's story showcases the power of passion and adaptability. Moving from the deserts of California to the busy neighborhoods of Texas, she proves that it's important to chase your dreams, even if they take you in surprising directions.
