A Promise to Remember Smyrna Public Safety Foundation · Smyrna, GA

Twenty-five years after September 11, Smyrna honors sacrifice, service and the responsibility to never forget

Twenty-five years later, the memory of Sept. 11, 2001, still carries weight.

Smyrna marked the anniversary with a remembrance ceremony hosted by the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation in conjunction with the City of Smyrna, Smyrna Fire Department and Smyrna Police Department. Between City Hall and the Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial, American flags represented the Twin Towers, creating a quiet and powerful tribute that remained in place throughout the weekend.

For Smyrna Fire Chief Brian Marcos, the anniversary was a reminder of the purpose that continues to guide first responders.

“What I walked away from [9/11 recognizing] is that, ‘yes, we could be called to lay down our lives, but more importantly, that the mission, our purpose is so well defined,’” Marcos said. “To wake up every morning and to know what it is that your calling is and what you’re supposed to do, that is a blessing.”

Smyrna Police Chief Keith Zgonc challenged attendees to carry that memory forward.

“My challenge is to not only never forget September 11, 2001,” Zgonc said, “but … let’s make sure our younger folks … never forget Sept. 11, 2001.”

Following the ceremony, first responders participated in the 9/11 Memorial Run, continuing the morning’s tribute through an act of remembrance and unity. The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation also offered commemorative challenge coins for a $25 donation, with proceeds benefiting the first responders Benevolence Fund.

For those who remember Sept. 11 firsthand, the anniversary offered a moment to reflect on a day that changed the nation. For younger generations, it offered a chance to understand why the memory still matters.

Twenty-five years later, Smyrna gathered not simply to look back, but to carry forward the stories, sacrifice and spirit of service born from one of America’s darkest days.
