Crafting and Cultivating Tulsa’s Botanical Treasure

Jonesplan has played a key role in shaping Tulsa’s premier garden destination.

Nestled in the heart of our city, the Tulsa Botanic Garden offers a serene escape into nature, blending art, horticulture, and community spirit. Over the past decade, Jonesplan, a local construction firm, has played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, transforming the garden into a vibrant destination for families and nature enthusiasts alike.

Founded in 2003 by Justin and Matt Jones, experts in the landscape industry, Jonesplan began as a company specializing in golf course construction. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for outdoor spaces, the company evolved to tackle larger, more intricate projects. Their expertise in landscape construction, combined with a commitment to quality and communication, has made them a trusted partner for public and community spaces.

Their journey with the Tulsa Botanic Garden commenced in 2014, when they were selected as the general contractor for the A.R. & MaryLouise Tandy Floral Terraces project. This marked the beginning of an ongoing series of collaborations that has spanned over a decade, each project adding a unique layer to the garden's evolving landscape.

The Floral Terraces, completed in 2015, set the tone for Jonesplan’s involvement. Spanning over three acres, the terraces feature formal landscaping with cast stone and concrete water channels, native stone walls, and glass pavilions. Every detail was meticulously crafted, with measurements precise to a quarter-inch, ensuring a harmonious blend with the natural surroundings. “This was our most technical project,” says Brad Kmita, senior project manager at Jonesplan. “Beyond the fact that it required a lot of straight lines and symmetry, plans were also developing during construction, and details were being given on the fly.”

Following this, the Josephine G. and Timothy W Driskill Children's Discovery Garden was constructed, offering a whimsical environment where children could engage with nature through interaction. Designed not as a traditional playground but as an exploratory space, it includes features like the Spring Giant—a 20-foot hand-carved stone face—and the Stream Valley, a flowing water feature that meanders through the garden. “Designs are actually underway for a renovation of the Children’s Garden to add more child-friendly activities that support gross and fine motor skill development.,” Brad added.

In 2023, Jonesplan and Manhattan Construction Group completed two significant additions together: the Bumgarner Family Foundation Lotus Pool and Stanford Family Liberty Garden. The Lotus Pool is an aquatic garden adorned with floating gardens and water lily shelves, creating a tranquil oasis. Adjacent to it, the Liberty Garden extends into the central lake, connected by a 31-foot pre-engineered bridge, offering panoramic views and a serene setting for events. “These two projects were probably our most difficult due to the large incorporation of the lake into the designs, not to mention they were being built simultaneously,” Brad noted.

Working within a botanical environment presents unique challenges. Jonesplan’s approach emphasizes preserving the existing landscape, utilizing native materials, and integrating design elements that complement the natural beauty of the garden. For instance, during the construction of the Children's Discovery Garden, the team employed helical piers to minimize disruption to the mature post oak grove, ensuring the longevity of the trees. “We have a conscious mindset in our projects to preserve the existing landscape. If we need to hand dig it, we’re going to hand dig it. We aren’t looking to take the easy way out, we want to go about our work in the way that is best for the project.”

Attention to detail is evident in subtle features throughout the garden. “A lot of times, we have to be surgical with our projects, fitting them into the surrounding landscape without disturbing it,” says Brad. “A fun fact about each of our projects is that somewhere within each one, there is an inconspicuous date etched into a stone or part of the scenery to mark the year each section was constructed. But they are very inconspicuous, you have to try and find them!”—a hidden gem for visitors to discover.

Beyond their technical expertise, Jonesplan’s commitment to the community is reflected in their work at Tulsa Botanic Garden. Brad notes that the company's involvement has always been about more than just construction; it's about creating spaces that families can enjoy and cherish. Their contributions have helped transform the garden into a beloved destination, fostering a deeper connection between the community and nature.

For families seeking a place to explore this summer, Tulsa Botanic Garden offers a wealth of experiences. From the towering Spring Giant in the Children's Discovery Garden to the tranquil reflections in the Lotus Pool, each corner invites discovery. The Liberty Garden provides a peaceful retreat with its expansive lawn and scenic views, perfect for a leisurely picnic or a quiet moment of reflection. The Jim and Cherry Bost Arboretum, Jonesplan's most recent project at Tulsa Botanic Garden, is an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll through a beautiful landscape of righ trees and rare plants.

As you explore these thoughtfully designed spaces, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and care behind their creation. Throughout the gardens Jonesplan has helped bring to life, their legacy is etched into every path, pavilion, and planting—making the Tulsa Botanic Garden not just a place to visit, but a place to truly experience, explore, and enjoy. It really is a world-class destination.

With over 20 years of experience, Jonesplan specializes in complex landscape construction projects, including parks, botanic gardens, and environmental restoration.
