The Forest Preserve District of Will County offers something for everyone—from peaceful nature walks to exciting outdoor adventures. With over 41 preserves to explore, you’ll find scenic hiking and biking trails, fishing spots, campgrounds, birdwatching areas, and a variety of year-round events.
Public Information Officer Cindy Cain encourages newcomers to start with nearby preserves and expand as they get more comfortable. One of the best ways to explore is by participating in the Be a Trailblazer challenge. This interactive experience runs from June 5 to August 9 and again from September 25 to November 8. Using the free Goosechase app, participants complete nature-themed missions at different preserves for a chance to win part of over $10,000 in prizes, including weekly random drawings.
If you're looking for a hidden gem, Cindy recommends Raccoon Grove for wildflowers and rare species, and Braidwood Dunes for sandy trails and unique plants. For hiking, visit Hickory Creek for rolling hills, Spring Creek Greenway for shaded woodland trails, or Lake Renwick for lakeside paths.
Fishing is popular at Monee Reservoir, Whalon Lake, Lake Chaminwood, and Hidden Lakes Trout Farm, with species like bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, sunfish, pike, and walleye. Whether on the water or shore, these preserves offer a perfect spot for anglers of all ages and skill levels.
Birdwatching thrives at McKinley Woods, where visitors can explore woodland trails or watch birds from the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center’s large windows overlooking a feeding area.
The Forest Preserve District of Will County focuses on conservation and accessibility by restoring habitats, removing invasive species, and protecting rare ecosystems. Their efforts include habitat restoration, prescribed burns, and endangered species monitoring. With dedicated staff and long-term planning, the District keeps preserves safe, clean, and welcoming—ensuring nature is accessible and enriching for everyone.
