1. “Cool” is just a matter of opinion.
In our world, it’s easy to compare ourselves to others. I get it! But there’s no one out there quite like you. When I was younger, I didn’t fit in with any particular crowd in school and that was ok with me! I made friends with all sorts of people, and I marched to my own drum. By leaning into the fact that I wasn’t interested in the latest trends or being “cool,” I was open to trying new things and taking risks. In doing so, I had the courage to move to New York City at 19, simply because I wanted to. Do whatever makes you happy. You’ll find it is so joyful!
2. Hard work always wins in the end.
It took me 11 years to walk across the Miss America stage. That means I spent 11 years working on my talent, working on my community service initiative, practicing my interview skills and public speaking, and pushing through when I thought I couldn’t. Even if I hadn’t won Miss America, I still would have all of these valuable skills in my pocket (that I continue to use today!). So whether it’s sports, dance, cooking, or algebra, if you want to achieve something… keep at it. You never know how that hard work will pay off in the long run.
3. Find your own personal heroes.
While you can look up to celebrities and TikTok stars, I would encourage you to look around for role models. Is there a teacher, your family friend, a parent, or a community leader in your life who is kind, passionate, and trustworthy? Who is leading by example? Having tangible role models and mentors is such an important part of becoming your best self.
