Tucked inside the lively atmosphere of American Axes, the sound of steel striking wood has become part of a growing movement centered on competition, connection, and community. What may seem like a trendy night-out activity has evolved into something much bigger for founder Dan Fisher and the American Axes team. It’s a place where people gather to challenge themselves, celebrate milestones, and create true experiences together.
What truly sets American Axes apart is the culture Dan has built around the business.
Founded originally in Georgia before expanding westward, American Axes was created with the idea that axe throwing should feel exciting but never intimidating. Dan’s vision centered on creating a space where anyone, regardless of skill level, could walk in, learn something new, and leave feeling more confident than when they arrived.
“American Axes has some of the best coaches in the entire country. Our experience is not just handing over an axe and saying good luck, we genuinely care about the success of our customers and can quickly get people coached up on how to successfully throw an axe. Sometimes it’s immediately, sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes, but everyone who visits our store will know how to throw an axe when they walk out the door.” says Dan.
A focus on community has also helped American Axes become more than simply an entertainment venue. Competitive league nights and tournaments regularly bring together throwers from across the region, creating a tight-knit social scene. The company has embraced the growing world of competitive axe throwing while still maintaining an environment that feels welcoming to beginners and families alike.
According to Dan, “American Axes became an affiliate to the World Axe Throwing League in 2022 and debuted at the World Championship in 2024 with 8 throwers wearing our logo on their jersey. In just 3 years time, we went from 8 to 26 people which was the most of any Axe Throwing brand in the business. We believe our success is because of our culture. We want to put people first and make axe throwing affordable for those who love the sport and because of that, we have a lot of throwers that are hungry to get better.”
What began as a local entertainment venue has steadily evolved into a nationally recognized competitive presence. The growth of American Axes on the world stage reflects a strong sense of teamwork and community Dan and his staff have intentionally built within the organization.
“There are five disciplines that are played for the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championship and we ended up with a runner up finish, 5th place, 9th, 11th (x2) and many other top finishers. While we didn’t win a discipline, getting to the finals was a big step for our team and we look forward to the 2027 event where we again expect to bring more great throwers to the Championship.”
In an era dominated by screens and digital distractions, gathering around a wooden target with friends has become an unexpectedly meaningful form of connection and camaraderie.
“There have been various stories about how American Axes has helped people get through personal challenges mostly because we offered a consistent safe place for people to be comfortable and spend their free time. This was not written in the business plan, it just happened and it has been the happiest accident of our business.” says Dan.
What started as a niche concept has become a destination where Colorado residents and visitors alike can discover their inner lumberjack, one throw at a time.
