Spring is Springing

Winter 2026 is in the books and it has been one of the driest and warmest winters on record. Hopefully, April brings lots of precipitation to our gardens. They definitely need the water. There is a lot to do in your April garden now. Here are some helpful tips for spring garden success!

If you have not amended your soil, now is the time add those nutrients. If you are unsure what your soil needs pick up a soil test kit or send a sample to the CSU Soil Testing Lab..

Remove and dispose of leaves under trees and shrubs. There are many insects and diseases that will over winter in garden debris.

Add one inch of compost to raised beds. Mix it into the top eight to ten inches of soil.

Add pre emergent to lawns to help prevent crab grass, dandelions and other pesky weeds.

Plant leafy greens like kale, lettuce, Swiss chard, spinach and arugula.

Plant broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower starts.

Direct sow parsley and chives.

About four weeks before last frost sow radishes, beets, carrots, and turnips. 

Don't forget about peas and potatoes.

Hold off on warm season vegetables until after Mother's Day.
