Art is still alive in Smyrna

As a result of a hard-working volunteer Board of Directors at Smyrna Arts Council’s (SAC), art fans in Smyrna and surrounding areas, have access to a host of all forms of art to broaden minds and entertain.

The Council offers a strong, independent voice for our vibrant cultural community by empowering, facilitating and advocating for the arts – whether in our public schools, through local galleries and performance venues, or on our streets.

Volunteer President Joan Stuart says SAC defines art as "visual, including painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture and performing arts. It also features music, dance, and theatre. We continuously look for opportunities to present quality art in all these forms to our community.”

As with everyone, the COVID pandemic has caused us to take different routes, thus, volunteer Board Member Leah Barnes makes it possible for you to view a spring 2021 eight-local-and-regional artist installation at Smyrna City Hall. According to Barnes, she coordinates about three different city hall art installations a year.

Also, from March 20-April 19, volunteer Board member Vanya Foote coordinates the M2R Fence Gallery of over 50 student-to-working artists’ works of art and photography, which are printed on 30” X 40” weather-safe panels. As a part of the M2R Trailfest, last May, before traveling throughout Cobb County, the M2R Fence Gallery debuted trackside downtown, Marietta.

“We are thrilled to join other Cobb County cities that host the traveling Fence Gallery,” says Foote.

Overseer SAC Board member Lisa Hawk informs that the original street-theatre production Secrets of Smyrna, scheduled in October 2020, will be staged when it is safe, hopefully later this year.

This is your chance to break into spring and reduce cabin fever by taking advantage of family-oriented local/regional inspirational, inspiring artwork.

#SMYRNAGAROCKS

The idea is simple. Paint rocks with bright colors or short messages and add #SmyrnaGARocks, then hide them – preferably in plain sight – so that people find them. If you find a rock, take a photo of it or a selfie with the rock and post it to the SmyrnaGARocks Facebook group. Then, replace the rock with one you’ve painted or re-hide the rock you found.
