Why was the Arts & Culture Collective of Yorba Linda created?
Yorba Linda is a beautiful, mature city with a notable lack of public art. Our goal is to create public art pieces by involving the public in the creative process. The Board of Directors Angela Waterman, Sandee Van Oyen, Mercedes Galante, and Terrie Medeiros share four basic ideals: the value of creative expression in developing the individual and society, the urgent need to repurpose, reuse, and recycle man-made elements, the importance of art education and exposure to art, and the value of community engagement.
What projects have been completed by the Collective?
We’ve facilitated the creation of several mosaic tables and a planter, all of which are displayed on Main Street. We plan a new mosaic every June and bring all the materials out to the Celebrate Yorba Linda Street Fair where the community can work on it together. We also bring materials for a second, temporary installation. One year, it was a used-pallet sculpture that the public wrapped with yarn. Another year, we folded origami cranes to hang in the trees for the summer. Last June, we worked with Yorba Linda artist Jamie Kough to turn a rusted fence on Imperial Highway into a beautiful, contemporary mural.
How can the community give back to the Arts & Culture Collective of Yorba Linda?
Yorba Linda residents have shown great interest and enthusiasm for our efforts, but we need greater financial support. We need to make sure that professional artists are paid for their work. They are highly trained professionals who spent many years in school studying other artists and perfecting their own techniques. We try to reuse and repurpose materials, but supplies must be purchased. All monetary donations go to pay our artists a small stipend for their work and to buy supplies. The Arts & Culture Collective of Yorba Linda (A&CC) is a 501 (c3) under the Hill of Hope umbrella of charities. Donations can be made online at hillofhope.me/donate, and checks can be made out to "Hill of Hope" with Arts & Culture Collective written in the memo line. The mailing address is 5753 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road #G349, Anaheim Hills, CA 92807.
