This Year, Try Apple Pie With a Homemade Crust

My mom wasn't a great cook, dad was the chef in our large family. But one thing mom knew how to make well, and passed that recipe onto me, was apple pie. Women who made pies decades ago, like my mom, didn't have the option of grabbing ready-made pie dough in the grocery store. While I'll confess I often do that now, there's really nothing like apple pie with a light and crumbly homemade crust. Takes a little longer, but it's definitely worth the effort! Here's mom's best homemade pie dough recipe.

 Pie Dough

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup cold water

1 stick cold butter

1/2 tspn salt

Method

1. Combine flour and salt in a bowl.  2. Using either a pastry blender or two butter knives cut butter into flour until butter is the size of peas. 3. Make a well in the mixture and add the cold water. 4.Mix with hands until dough forms a ball. 5.Refrigerate 1 hour, remove and then split into two balls. 6.On a floured surface, flatten each ball by hand. 7. Roll out each ball to fit either a 9-inch or 10-inch pie plate.
