Summer Oasis

Soak in the Duncan family's curated, Roman-style outdoor space

The sun beaming down, the chirping of cicadas, the sweet sound of children playing and splashing in the pool...there's something special about an Alabama summer that, although often sweltering, we long for throughout the rest of the year. Summer is a time for family and relaxation, and if you're savvy, you may have created your own haven to have a place of your own to soak in the sun. Upon moving into their Huntsville home, Kaitlin Duncan knew she wanted to create a timeless space for her family and friends to enjoy, not only in summer, but in every season. We sat down with her to find out exactly how she brought her backyard oasis to fruition from concept to functional beauty.

What was your vision when you first started designing your backyard oasis?

My first thought was to transform this backyard into my own personal escape. Having lived the last decade on a working farm with little to no privacy, I developed a constant urge to travel. That lack of seclusion pushed me to seek out dreamy villas and peaceful escapes. I wanted to bring this experience home and the columns supporting the pergola reminded me of Roman architecture and instantly sparked my vision for clean lines, marble-like textures, and a minimalist yet lavish aesthetic.

How did you choose the elements that brought your vision to life?

I began by embracing what was already part of the space. The pergola, with its stunning white columns, immediately set the tone and felt too iconic to change. The pool area, however, was overgrown and lacked purpose, so I cleared it to create a more open, functional layout for lounging and entertaining. I chose white and earthy tones, and I knew both bronze and teak would be perfect finishing touches, bringing a sense of modern sophistication that feels elevated, but timeless.

What challenges did you face during the transformation process, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between form and function. I wanted the space to feel luxurious, but it also needed to be practical and livable day to day. Clearing the overgrown vegetation was a major undertaking, and Alabama’s unpredictable weather made timing everything a constant challenge. It took a lot of determination and creative problem-solving, but I stayed focused on the vision and made thoughtful decisions one step at a time. That mindset kept the process moving forward, even when things got tough.

Which features do your family and guests enjoy the most when spending time in your backyard?

The sense of peace is what everyone seems to love most. After leaving the farm, I worried that I’d lose my connection to nature, but the opposite happened. The backyard feels incredibly tranquil, almost like stepping into a private retreat. Sharing meals under the pergola, lounging by the pool, or simply soaking in the stillness makes the space feel like an escape. It’s become a favorite gathering spot for family and friends where we can relax, connect, and truly unwind.

How do you maintain the beauty and functionality of your space throughout the Alabama seasons?

It’s definitely a labor of love. Being surrounded by trees means every season brings its own mess like fall leaves, spring pollen, and twigs from rainy storms. It requires regular maintenance, but it’s absolutely worth it to keep the space looking and feeling beautiful all year round.

Do you have any favorite moments or memories that have taken place in your backyard?

Hosting my best friend Hollie’s birthday was truly unforgettable. It was one of those perfect nights. An incredible group of women, warm laughter, and Hollie’s only request: that we all get in the water. And we did! We floated, laughed, and soaked in the night under a blanket of stars.

What advice would you give to someone dreaming of turning their own backyard into a personal paradise?

Do it before you move in ;)

Seriously...start with a clear vision, embrace what you already have, and don’t be afraid to make bold choices that reflect you. A backyard oasis is more than a design—it’s a lifestyle.
