For more than 75 years, St. Coletta's of Illinois has been creating vocational opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today, that mission is taking shape in a welcoming place where the aroma of freshly baked cookies fills the air: Coletta's Crossing Bakery.
The bakery is more than a place to learn how to bake. It is a real workplace where individuals gain practical job skills, earn competitive wages and discover new possibilities. Each week, bakery team members work alongside Bakery Manager Elsa Espinosa Diaz, learning everything from mixing dough and preparing recipes to decorating, packaging and maintaining a clean, safe kitchen.
But the most important lessons extend far beyond delicious cookies. Program participants practice communication, teamwork, punctuality, time management, customer service and problem-solving. They learn workplace responsibility by arriving on time, following directions, working with colleagues and taking pride in producing a quality product.
The results can be life-changing. One participant, Arlene, completed the bakery training, earned her certification and used her new skills to secure a job outside of St. Coletta's. Arlene's achievement captures the program's ultimate goal: preparing individuals for competitive employment.
Others are discovering new talents and building confidence along the way. Kevin found a passion for making dough after beginning in packaging, while Laurie has embraced the bakery as a place she looks forward to coming to every day. David enjoyed his experience so much that he asked to continue working at the bakery after his rotation ended.
And then there are the customers. With favorites such as Chocolate Chip, S’mores, Cranberry Oatmeal, Cookies & Cream and Salted Caramel, each purchase offers something sweeter than a cookie. It supports meaningful employment, builds community connections and reminds participants that their work matters.
As Coletta’s Crossing Bakery grows, so does its vision: more opportunities for individuals, stronger community partnerships, new baked goods and additional pathways to employment. Ultimately, the bakery hopes to be known not only for its signature treats, but also for something even more meaningful: the lives transformed through the dignity, confidence and purpose that fulfilling work provides.
