Balancing A Friendship and Business Partnership

Friends Brandon Moon and Rafael Pinho combine expertise to help local business owners

A serendipitous meeting through the Northlake chapter of F3, a workout group for men that emphasizes Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith, is what sparked the beginning of a friendship between Brandon Moon and Rafael Pinho. That friendship would eventually grow into a business partnership and the founding of TD Pine Advisors, a strategic advisory firm focused on helping business owners build long-term value and future options in their business.

Brandon, with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, initially founded a consulting business on his own and contacted Rafael, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), to help with the financial aspects of a client’s business plan. It quickly became apparent that working together under the same business umbrella would give clients better access to a wider range of expertise.

“We are very well aligned in a common purpose and mission but come at it from different angles,” explained Rafael. “I'm more about how things translate to numbers, but I know nothing about how to execute some strategies like Brandon does. At the same time, I’m keeping Brandon accountable for the results of those strategies, whether in our business or in our clients’ businesses.”

Through TD Pine Advisors, Brandon and Rafael help business owners gain financial clarity, strengthen the value of their company, and turn what has often been a demanding job into a strategic asset—one that supports both future plans and long-term wealth. “There are so many business owners who have this plan that their business is going to be their retirement, but they’ve never put pencil to paper about the details like who is going to buy the business, how are they going to sell it, and what is the value,” said Brandon. “Our aim is to provide clarity on options and what an exit strategy might look like.”

Their hands-on approach is driven by getting to know the specific details of each business and developing tailored strategies based on each situation, instead of making businesses fit into cookie-cutter formulas.

Although both Brandon and Rafael have experience with large corporations, they want to cultivate a lifestyle of pouring into local businesses and giving small business owners access to expert advising and strategies in their own community. They work with businesses of all sizes, whether newly started or well established, and from all sectors including retail, real estate, medical offices, and more.

With the firm belief that great conversations take place over a cup of coffee, the pair recently launched a coffee brand, Value Climb, to support small business owners through community events. The brand's proceeds fund events to bring business owners together and give them access to a knowledge base that they would not get otherwise.

Nurturing a business relationship and friendship comes naturally to Brandon and Rafael, who have a friendly rapport and genuinely enjoy working together to help others. “My favorite part of working with Rafa is being challenged every day. We have backgrounds that complement each other so well that when one of us has a blind spot, the other fills it,” shared Brandon. “So every day, not only are we growing the business, but we're also growing ourselves, personally and professionally, making this less like a job and more like a lifestyle.”
