Step into B&M Market and meet Jonathan Goldstein. You may already know him. He’s the friendly guy, with the big smile, and the warm handshake, who seems to know everyone who enters his store by name.
Growing up in Rivervale, Jonathan had jobs in the food industry throughout his life. Although he always thought he would someday own a restaurant, his day job was at a trading desk on Wall Street. Until he heard that B&M Market was on the “market.” “I found out it was for sale from family friends,” says Jonathan. “I knew this is what I wanted to do.”
Jonathan enjoys providing the highest-quality foods and prime cuts of meats for his customers. “Our motto is ‘prime all the time,’” says Jonathan. “You won’t get a better steak anywhere. Our Bergen’s Best Burgers are second to none. Our skirt steak with scallion sauce, crab cakes, and veal chops are delicious.” The Market’s beef is all USDA Aged Prime, and the chicken is all-natural from Bell & Evans. They carry Jaindl turkeys from Pennsylvania, which are nationally renowned. The Ossabaw pork is tender and flavorful, and they sell only USDA Prime Colorado lamb. Homemade burgers, sausage, and franks round out the butcher department selections.
Operating a business in Bergen County means elevating the customer service experience to a new level. “We are a small business, and we know how important it is to make every interaction special,” he says. “Our employees are attentive, and we have great relationships with our customers. For example, I know which clients have special dietary concerns and can help make appropriate suggestions for them. Those are the relationships that set us apart from the larger stores.”
When there’s a party in town, Jonathan is in the know. “We help people plan showers, engagement parties, barbecues, and dinner parties. I help our catering customers by being the one-stop shop for their off-premise catering by supplying waitstaff and making the necessary connections for tent and dishware rentals, liquor stores, and so on. I’m the point-person to make the event go off seamlessly by coordinating all the pieces.”
“Our goal is to ensure you have a positive experience with us,” says Jonathan. “From the time you enter our store to the point at which you sit down to enjoy dinner in the comfort of your home—we want it to be special.”
