Suresh Ramaswamy, D.D.S., is a board-certified orthodontist with an office in New City, New York, and opened up a second practice in Old Tappan, New Jersey a year ago. He and his staff offer the latest orthodontic techniques, including metal and clear braces and custom aligners. Dr. Suresh and his team are always available to answer questions and support their patients throughout their treatment. Here's what we learned.
Dr. Suresh, what made you decide to pursue a career in orthodontia?
Following my older brother, who had migrated to New York from India, I arrived in the 80s to pursue the American dream. Growing up in the eighth-most populated city in the world (Mumbai) helped me prepare for the chaos of New York City, and I started from the bottom to get where I am today. I began as a laboratory technician and eventually earned my dental degree from N.Y.U. and my orthodontic credentials from Fairleigh Dickinson University. I had a mentor named Stan Morris, D.M.D., who took me under his wing, and I used to make all of his appliances for him while going through school. I am forever grateful for his wisdom.
How would you describe your business philosophy?
Some orthodontists tend to overthink a case and make it more difficult than it has to be. Others make it look easy. I like to use a tennis analogy with orthodontics--particularly in comparison to the effortless style of Roger Federer, who makes being a tennis champion look easy. His motions are so smooth, and he loves the game. Orthodontics comes fairly easily to me—I don't find it tedious or difficult. I find it tremendously rewarding when I can truly help my patients achieve amazing results.
What is your biggest inspiration? What do you enjoy most about your work?
I find fulfillment in providing high-quality care and ensuring my patients feel comfortable and confident during their treatment. I am committed to staying up to date on the latest advancements in orthodontics and continuously improving my skills to provide the best possible care for my patients.
My dedication to my work is evident in the positive feedback from my patients. They always mention that they appreciate my expertise, compassion, and attention to detail. I take great pride in helping my patients.
Do you have any family members who are following in your footsteps?
Both of my children are in the process of finishing their orthodontic residencies. As a family, we've witnessed their commitment to the art and science of orthodontics, and we couldn't be more proud. We're excited to see how they'll contribute to the community's oral health and well–being in the coming years!
Orthodontia can sometimes seem overwhelming—especially to a young patient. How do you put them at ease and make things more "fun"?
I am a very talented singer, and I delight in singing my favorite songs all day. It adds a touch of fun to the workplace and spreads joy to my team and patients. Don't be surprised if you catch me humming a song during your appointment. It's just my way of making your journey to a stunning smile a bit more melodious!
