Beauty in Every Step

Renaissance Hardwood Floors creates unique custom hardwood flooring that will last a lifetime

Hardwood floors are a timeless classic that adds a touch of elegance to any home. From traditional to contemporary design, natural hardwood has a unique look that will add warmth and character to your home. With proper care and maintenance, your hardwood floor can last for decades while it increases the value of your home.

Charla Nicklas and her husband, Tom have owned Renaissance Hardwood Floors for more than 40 years. They have built an impeccable reputation for fine craftsmanship and superior customer service. Their custom-designed and handcrafted hardwood floors are known for their quality, beauty, and originality. Nicklas is often asked, “What’s in style right now?”

“Anything you want!” she says. “We can create custom floors, ceilings, beams, walls, furniture, countertops, and more. If it has to do with wood, we can do it.”

Nicklas says too many people get fixated on what is popular on home improvement shows. Some of the prettiest floors she has seen are dark wood floors in a modern farmhouse kitchen. Custom herringbone and chevron floors are hot right now and have stood the test of time. Hand-scraped floors are still popular, as well.

She says, “Don’t be afraid to go against the grain. Just because a trend is popular doesn’t mean it's the right floor for you. Go with what you love and make it uniquely your own.”

Hardwood flooring celebrates the subtle variances and imperfections in the wood. There are no two trees that are alike in the forest, which is why hardwoods are so uniquely beautiful.

However, if you are particularly discerning and want a flawless finish, Nicklas suggests a product such as pre-finished wood flooring or luxury vinyl plank. These products have a perfect finish because they are manufactured by machines. She agrees the quality of pre-finished wood and vinyl plank has improved over the years, but the warmth and beauty of natural wood are lost.

Nicklas says it is also easier to repair a damaged hardwood floor. Unless you had the forethought to buy extra pre-finished or vinyl plank flooring for a future repair, it is not going to match.

The company’s restoration expertise is well-known in the older areas of Midtown and Cherry Street. Floors that are 10 years old or more will have a polyurethane finish that has ambered over time. It isn’t the stain that is hard to match, it is the sheen. Renaissance Hardwood Floors’ installers can lace in new boards, if required, and seamlessly match the finish. They can also source unusual woods and non-standard-sized wood to match an older home’s flooring.

She says, “Engineered floors are gaining in popularity and offer advantages, especially in wider planks. It doesn’t hurt to ask us for a complimentary quote. Hardwood floors are typically within reach, and you will have a beautiful investment that will last a lifetime.”

Noteworthy Projects

If you have been in a home with a stunning inlaid wood medallion in the foyer, chances are it was designed by Renaissance Hardwood Floors. Recently, the company was honored to create a large medallion for Oral Roberts University.

“One of our most memorable projects was with a homeowner who was a historian. She asked us to install original 18” planks without sanding or adding a finish to keep the floors authentic to its colonial time period,” she says.

“We also had a builder that had purchased reclaimed wood from an antique barn in Pennsylvania. The wood was incredibly dry, but we were able to refurbish it to its original glory. It took a little more time, but it was a gorgeous floor.”

And if that isn’t interesting enough, the company is making its mark designing and installing custom basketball courts.

Nicklas says, “We really can do anything. If you can dream it, we can create it in wood.”
