Fresh Wax, Fresh Confidence

Practical Advice for a First Time Waxer or a Seasoned Pro

Whether you have two caterpillars fighting it out on your brow or thinning brows that need a little TLC, the right care and expertise is important. Before walking into the salon for any kind of waxing appointment, there are a few things you ought to know. Bryndy Hughes, owner of Empire Body Wax, guides us through the processes of body waxing from pre-care to aftercare, giving you the best care for the outcome you desire.

What pre-care advice can you give someone considering waxing?

Hydration is key. For those who are worried about the pain factor, preparation begins with being properly hydrated, and cutting caffeine intake for the 24 hours before is also a plus. Gentle exfoliation and clean, no-lotion skin will improve the pull process. Also, taking a Tylenol thirty minutes prior can ease some pain and discomfort. Bryndy also recommends not plucking or shaving for the two weeks before you wax. “The first time is always the most uncomfortable, however with consistent visits you will find it quick and easy.”

What aftercare should I be doing?

No pools or hot tubs for 24 hours, you don't want to introduce new bacteria to the skin. Then just keep the area clean for three to four days after.

What should I keep in mind between waxing's?

It takes three to four waxes to get all your hair on the same growth cycle. The more you wax, the cleaner your pulls will be. Review the products that you use on a regular basis, retinol and acne products have a tendency to thin our skin. If you absolutely can’t do without these products, limit the use one week prior to waxing.

For someone new to waxing, what do you think people should know?

“Eyebrows are my favorite because they shape our face. Remember your face isn’t the same on each side; your eyebrows are (siblings) not twins.” Know what you are looking for when waxing:  a cleanup, a reshape or a balance of your face. Think of your eyebrows like they are the frame of a masterpiece.
