Before the Day You Need It Ruth Shannon - State Farm Insurance Agent · Flower Mound, TX

Prepare for life’s unexpected moments with coverage that provides protection and peace of mind.

Gratitude often begins with an ordinary conversation about what could go wrong and what will matter if the worst happens. However, we may not recognize it as gratitude at the time.

Over the years, Ruth Shannon has taken calls from homeowners with burst pipes, business owners facing major losses, and families navigating life-altering diagnoses. The gratitude usually comes later. By the time they call, the decisions that make a difference have usually been made—often when nothing seemed especially urgent.

Shannon understands that tension well. As a State Farm agency owner in Flower Mound, she spends her time helping people prepare for days they hope will never come.

“The stories are really where insurance comes to life,” she says.

Her work is rooted in faith and family. Shannon comes from generations of entrepreneurs. Her great-grandparents operated a restaurant and bar in Meeker, Oklahoma, where they also played music. Her mother was a builder and realtor, while her father developed the streets, water, and sewer for the properties she built. Several of Shannon’s siblings became business owners.

“We want to take care of our community,” she says. “We just do it in different ways.”

Her way is helping people understand their coverage before they need it.

During the North Texas freeze of 2021, several of Shannon’s customers experienced burst pipes and flooded homes. Some were facing significant property damage for the first time ever. They were cold, displaced, and unsure what to do next.

Shannon reached out. Her team helped them understand the claims process and find contractors to begin cleaning up and repairing the damage. They could not erase the disruption, but they kept confusion from becoming another problem.

One homeowner later referred her brother, a local business owner, to Shannon’s agency. The woman had never met Shannon in person, but she remembered who called first and asked, “How can we help?”

“What greater way can a customer say thank you than by telling their friends and family, ‘These people are going to take great care of you’?” Shannon says.

Another customer owns a Texas feed company with 28 tractor-trailers delivering throughout Texas and serving agricultural customers statewide. During a delivery in Houston, someone stole one of its trucks, a new 18-wheeler loaded with animal feed. The company’s commercial coverage protected both the truck and its cargo.

A stolen vehicle is a property loss and an interruption: missed deliveries, strained cash flow, and customers left waiting. The right coverage helped keep one theft from becoming a larger business crisis.

Some experiences stay with Shannon long after the claim is resolved.

One young woman purchased a modest life insurance policy while she was healthy. It included an option to acquire additional coverage without proving insurability again. She used that option more than once.

Years later, she was dying from breast cancer. When another opportunity to increase her coverage arrived, she signed the application from her bed and made one premium payment before she died. The additional policy provided another $25,000 for her husband and high-school-aged daughter.

“She was so happy to know she was going to be able to increase her family’s benefit,” Shannon remembers. “It gave her such peace.”

While the policy could not change the outcome, it gave a mother one final way to care for her family.

Experiences like these shape how Shannon and her team approach every policy discussion. With more than 200 years of combined experience, they help customers compare what is covered, what can be removed, and what risks they would carry themselves.

Lower cost and adequate protection are not always the same thing.

“If I don’t help you protect what you’re already invested in, then I’m not doing you any favors,” Shannon says.

She is willing to lose business rather than recommend coverage she believes may fail someone. Her office, for example, will not write a homeowners policy without available protection for hidden water leakage and seepage, because damage behind a wall may go unnoticed for months.

That conviction comes down to one question: What was in force on the day it happened?

Before that day, insurance can feel abstract. Afterward, it becomes a contractor arriving at a flooded home, a business continuing after a truck is stolen, or a family receiving help because someone planned ahead.

Shannon is grateful for her faith, her team, and the customers who have trusted the agency for decades. Her customers’ gratitude often appears later, when preparation meets a moment no one wanted.

But gratitude did not begin with the claim. It began earlier, when Shannon helped them anticipate what could happen and cared enough to ensure they were prepared.
