Beginner's Guide to Cross Country Skiing

Spending the winter nestled up cozy by the fire might sound tempting, but the breathtaking, winter landscape is beckoning

Cross Country skiing is a great alternative for those who don’t enjoy downhill and revel in the quiet stillness of the back country. Learn the basics and get moving in just a few simple steps. With some practice and a bit of research, anyone can make the long winter months more enticing with this snowy sport.

Visit your local ski shop. The experts at your local shop will figure out what kind of cross-country skiing interests you and guide your purchases. Do you want to trek through the woods? Are you mostly interested in getting exercise? Do you have your eye on a local groomed trail? Talking over your goals will aid them in determining your needs. Think about where you want to ski and how you want to ski there.

Get good gear. This means skis, bindings, boots, poles and clothing. Modern ski gear is good quality, even at the entry level. You should be able to buy a package with all you need for a reasonable price.

Get Lessons. Your local shop can point you to ski instructors. Your local ski club may offer free technique sessions. A good instructor will give you enough information in one afternoon to chew on for a whole winter. You can improve more in one week with an instructor than you could in several winters by yourself.

Wear the right clothing! It’s not just about the skis. If you get sweaty and cold, you will not be enjoying yourself. Choose proper garments to ensure comfort and functionality.

Ready to hit the trails? Red Lodge Nordic Center is nestled at the base of Beartooth Mountains on Aspen Ridge Ranch, three miles from downtown Red Lodge. Ski from December through March on 15 km of machine groomed trails, from open meadows to rolling loops through the Aspen trees. A perfect place for the entire family to have a great day of skiing, picnicking and picture taking.
