Behind The Brush: Jennifer Janesko

Local Artist Creates Abstract Landscapes, Figurative Art

Tell us a little bit about how you got started in art.

I have always loved drawing, and a pencil and paper was my happy place. My dad was an artist in his spare time, and it really opened up a magical space in my childhood. My dad is no longer on this earth, so when I create art as an adult, I feel connected to him.

What media do you work with and how would you describe your artistic style?

I work with every medium in the realm of 2D. I haven’t tried sculpture, but that doesn’t mean it’s not in my future.

I consider my abstract art “abstract landscapes.” They are inspired by the vistas that I see when I travel. I layer those memories in my mind and paint them into a single image. I have done several commissions in KC from photos that collectors supply from their own travel experiences. Currently, I’m using mixed media—acrylic/pastel/charcoal/oil on canvas.

My figurative art is created using either oil or acrylic for paintings and graphite or ink for drawings.

What other artists do you look up to or draw inspiration from?

I’m inspired by all things creative. Music, architecture, travel, design and photography are huge inspirations for me. I keep all those elements in constant rotation in my life. Take any of those away, and my heart physically aches. Of course, I love other artists, but I don’t get wrapped up in anyone’s style too much as I want to keep my mind free of a singular influence. The art I have in my home is usually a style that’s unlike mine, which is why I find it fascinating.

Where can we find your art around town?

My website is, but I really encourage collectors to visit my Instagram account, @janeskoart, which is kept current daily. You can also watch my process and painting videos and see my new studio assistant, Mish Mish.

Are there any special projects that you have been working on?

Two years ago, I had a concept to shoot a nude model in my bathtub. Using the photos as reference, I have created a collection that will finally debut November 15 at the Crossroads Hotel. This project has been a long time coming, and I am so excited to show the collection in my home town. The images will be exhibited in a private space on the 1st floor of the hotel from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Space is limited. To RSVP, please email me or call me at 913-299-7779.
