Behind the Wine Adega Vinho Winery · Stonewall, TX

Tasting with Andy & Elena Bilger of Adega Vinho

Often, we read about wineries, awards, and coveted wine features that expound on words that can be intimidating when it comes to your “palate” or “grape varietals.” One thing that is expressly missing is the “people” behind the wine.

For that reason, Andrew and Elena Bilger of Adega Vinho feel like the perfect place to start.

I’ve had the immense fortune of knowing the Bilgers for nearly eight years, watching them move through several chapters of life and business. From establishing their estate winery in 2017, to opening their first tasting room during the uncertainty of COVID-19, to welcoming their grown sons from destinations around the world, they have continued to meet each chapter with the same warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in their community.

Their story also offers a glimpse into what makes the Texas Hill Country wine region special.

As wineries in other regions face growing challenges, it is worth asking what helps this community continue to grow. The answer, in part, seems to be the people behind it. Here, success does not have to come at the expense of a neighbor’s success.

Andy describes the relationships among the growers in Stonewall this way. “We have a community of growers here in Stonewall, and they all have been incredibly helpful during storms or with questions; undoubtedly Narrow Path Winery, William Chris, Pedernales, and Ron Yates have all been supportive neighbors in our enclave.”

The philosophy is simple: “We want our neighbors to be well, successful, and thriving”

That spirit seems to extend well beyond the vineyard. Andy and Elena have built a life around curiosity, adventure, and shared experiences. Andy is an avid surfer, and the two travel the world together in search of great waves and new places. Married for more than 30 years, they share a love of ’80s alternative music, cool vinyl collections, wine, travel, and good stories.

Their pursuit of an estate winery began in early 2016, when Elena discovered the Stonewall property that would eventually become home to Adega Vinho. As empty nesters, she, Andy, and Andy's brother and business partner, Michael, had become increasingly focused on making that dream a reality. Elena encouraged Andy to take the leap with his brother.

Andy’s appreciation for his wife and business partner is clear: “ I am so incredibly grateful for Elena because she always believes in me. That is what makes her a great partner.”

Today, with their Fredericksburg tasting room established and wine production underway, the Bilgers are settling into a chapter that feels more like enjoying what they have built.

Andy states, “We want to enjoy getting older and not be reliant on anyone.” Elena smiles and states, “ Anything we can do that inspires adventure, restoration, ways to reconnect with our family, and enjoying slowing down is perfect for me.”

That perspective may be one of the most compelling things about the Bilgers. Their investment is in more than wine. So, the next time you visit Adega Vinho, talk with Andy and Elena about your travels. You may leave with a great glass of wine, but you’ll likely leave with a good story, too.
