Being Thankful and Self Care

‘Tis the season to be thankful. Or so we’re told from the time the trees start changing colors and dropping leaves through the new year. We are living in unprecedented times and sometimes it’s hard to remember to be “thankful” and “grateful.” We live in a society of abundance. We go through seasons of “purging our houses” because we have too much. That is something we forget to be thankful for. We forget to be thankful for the most simple things. A roof over our heads, working heating systems, refrigerators full of food. And for a lot of people, we forget to be thankful for good health. Good health looks different for many people. It varies as much as we vary as people. But our mental health can really take a toll, even when we are “healthy.” Our self-care gets pushed to the back burner because life moves so fast. It’s easy to tell yourself you’ll make appointments later, “when things slow down.” Here’s the thing. Life isn’t slowing down. There’s always something big around the corner. But we HAVE to take care of ourselves or the burn-out will catch up to us. The millennial generation has it right, the way they focus on self-care, taking care of themselves first (or even second, third, or fourth). And if you think back to your last salon service, didn’t you walk out of the salon feeling amazing? Whether it’s for a simple blowout or a full spa day of services, you walk out of a salon feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready to take on the world. Taking a simple hour for a multitude of options in a salon means an hour of someone else taking care of you. An hour to put your phone on silent and actually be “off,” mentally and physically. Most salons have a relaxing atmosphere for a reason, they want you to relax. Leave your cares and stressors at the door, come in and take a load off. But, no one is going to make those appointments for you. You have to make the time to take care of yourself. So in a season of being thankful, be thankful and grateful to take care of yourself as well!
