Need to cool down by escaping stifling summer heat and humidity? Look no further than Playa Bowls Newtown for frosty treats that are both wholesome and refreshing – from thirst-quenching juices and smoothies to refreshing bowls with a frozen fruit base. The company's Summer Specials include plant-based Coconut Protein Bites, Coconut Cold Brew Coffee, Glow Bowl (made with an aloe/coconut base) and Mango Pina Colada Smoothie (a blend of mango, pineapple and coconut).
The bowls at Playa Bowls start with a base of frozen fruit, blended greens, oatmeal or chia pudding.
Acai, a dark purple berry native to Central and South America, always has been the star of the show, and what differentiates Playa Bowls. Leah Patterson, Playa general manager, explains that Playa Bowls don't dilute acai by blending it with other fruits or juices, allowing the “sweetness of the acai to stand on its own.” Customers approve, she adds, making the Nutella Bowl, made from frozen acai topped with slices of fresh banana and strawberry, granola, coconut flakes and a generous drizzle of chocolatey Nutella, the store’s bestseller.
Playa Bowls also has its own line of cold pressed bottled juices made from a specially curated mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices designed to boost immunity. New to the lineup this year is the 12-ounce Watermelon Refresh, targeted to lower inflammation. A blend of watermelon, lemon, ginger and hibiscus, it's invigorating with a unique sweet-spicy taste. Playa Bowl’s cold pressed juices also include two 3-ounce concentrated varieties: Elderberry Shot and Ginger Bomb, which can be enjoyed on their own or “added to a smoothie,” says Leah. “They've become tremendously popular.”
The idea for Playa Bowls was the brainchild of Jersey Shore natives and longtime surfers Robert Giuliani and Abby Taylor. Introduced to acai and pitaya bowls on surfing trips to Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, they shared the concept with Americans, starting with their home base of Belmar, New Jersey, in 2014.
Setting up a sidewalk pop-up stand, Robert and Abby sold bowls crafted from their own recipes and told their story to educate customers on the benefits of acai. The concept took off, they expanded their business to more than 140 stores nationwide, and the company's still growing.
Locally, Playa Bowls can be found in Newtown at 2913 S. Eagle Road and in Fairless Hills at 110 Lincoln Highway. Operating hours are Mondays through Fridays 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
