Corey’s journey into the outdoor living industry began long before launching the company. He spent summers working construction throughout high school and college and later climbed the ranks of a specialized home improvement company, eventually becoming vice president of operations. When he and his wife Paula decided to move from California to North Carolina to raise their children closer to family, they had to completely start over. "We earned our territory one house and one neighborhood at a time," Corey says.
The company specializes in new-build decks, deck repairs, sunrooms, pergolas, patio covers, and railings. Soon they will be expanding their services to include pavers, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and more. Corey says NC Deck & Rail does things a bit differently from their competitors. They don’t provide estimates. “That’s just guessing,” Corey says. Instead, they provide full proposals in writing to the homeowner. They hold several meetings with their clients, while also meeting internally with a project’s production manager and crews. Everything is done to code, and they stick to the agreed-upon schedules and timelines. At completion, the production manager does a walkthrough to ensure everything is completed to their high standards. Ultimately, it’s always about doing the right thing. “We want happy customers,” Corey says. "We promise them a five-star experience.”
For Corey and his team, every project begins with the same approach. They listen to the homeowner’s wants and needs. They’ll salvage an existing structure if they can. Sometimes they’ll talk a homeowner out of more expensive options and instead suggest features that better fit their lifestyle and budget. Corey calls it "de-featuring, not devaluing" — creating a customized design without sacrificing quality. Even as styles evolve, Corey believes great design should never chase trends alone. "We want it to look like it was always part of the original house," he says.
In just three years, NC Deck & Railing has extended its reach to serve nearly 1,000 households annually throughout the Triad.
