Petbar Arcadia is not your average grooming salon. It’s part spa-part studio, run by owners Brant Michaels and Dustin Carlson, two passionate dog dads who’ve turned their love of pets into a highly personalized, full-service grooming experience.
“There’s a lot more creativity involved than people realize,” Brant says. “Poodles and Bichon Frises, for example, have hair, not fur, which means our groomers can achieve these amazing, topiary-like cuts. You’re essentially working with a sculptural medium. And with the rise of doodles, we’re seeing more and more of these hybrid coats that let groomers get really artistic.”
But artistry only works when comfort and care are prioritized. That’s where Petbar’s philosophy shines: finding the perfect balance between form and function.
“Clients love a beautiful cut,” Dustin adds, “but if their dog’s coat is matted or hasn’t been properly maintained at home, we’re limited in what we can do. That’s why education is such a big part of what we offer.”
Arizona’s climate presents its own challenges. In the summer heat, many pet parents assume a full shave-down will help keep their dogs cool. But not so fast.
“Double-coated breeds like Huskies and Golden Retrievers shouldn’t be shaved,” Brant explains. “It actually impairs their ability to regulate body temperature and can damage the coat permanently. We try to walk clients through that, even using our own dog Merlin as an example… he’ll be sunbathing in 110 degrees and loving it.”
Unlike most salons, Petbar offers private grooming studios- walled-off spaces that keep anxious pups calm. The facility also features private drying rooms, gentle airflow fans, floor hooks for larger dogs, and multiple hold rooms so pets never feel rushed.
“No two dogs are the same,” Dustin says. “A rescue dog may need a different approach than a high-energy puppy or a senior with mobility issues.”
According to the American Kennel Club, regular grooming can reduce doggie anxiety by providing consistent, positive touch and routine, two factors proven to lower stress in dogs. Studies published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior show that tactile interaction like brushing and bathing can promote a sense of safety and bonding.
“We’ve had dogs come in completely matted, uncomfortable, barely able to move properly,” Brant shares. “A groom in that case isn’t about vanity, it’s about relieving discomfort and helping the dog feel safe again.”
Petbar Arcadia has earned a loyal following of humans and hounds alike. And they’re just getting started. “We’re hoping to open our second Scottsdale-area location soon.”
