The Yoga Lounge is more than a yoga studio; it is a place where individuals can find solace, support, and a sense of belonging. Built on the foundation of inclusivity and community, it welcomes everyone, regardless of experience level, background, or fitness ability. Since opening in September, 2024, the studio has quickly defined itself as a vibrant refuge for like-minded individuals who aim to improve their lives and the lives of those around them through the authentic and approachable practices of yoga.
Jenn Dufour, the studio’s founder, practiced competitive gymnastics in Southern California until the exertion began taking a toll on her joints. Around the age of 22, a friend suggested yoga as a way to find relief. She was reluctant at first, having the misconception that the practice wouldn't provide the same workout intensity she was accustomed to. And yet, she attended her first class and immediately fell in love. She got a job at the studio so she could practice more frequently, eventually enrolling in a teacher training course. Before even completing her training, she opened her first studio in San Luis Obispo, CA. Her deep understanding of movement and passion for the human body enabled her to create a space where others could thrive - a philosophy that is also reflected in The Yoga Lounge.
When it comes to yoga, the countless benefits are astronomical, but its most profound effects are often emotional and mental. Beyond the physical exercise, the combination of breathwork, meditation, and a supportive community fosters overall well-being. Jenn explains, “Yoga allows you to reconnect with yourself, to be present again. When you’re present, you can be grateful for what you have in this moment. Yoga calls us to focus on the present rather than dwell on the past or worry about the future.” This sense of presence, along with sharing the journey with others, builds a strong sense of community. It empowers you to not feel alone in those moments, ultimately boosting your mental health.
Yoga itself is a holistic practice, something which focuses on the spiritual, mental, and physical faculties of the body. “An investment in yourself is all yoga is,” Jenn says. “The greatest aspect of it is the fact you’re taking time out of your day to do something of your own.” It is more than just an investment in yourself, but also an investment in your community. Jenn acknowledges, “Being self-motivated can be a challenge, so coming to a place where people are making friends in the classes and even getting lunch afterwards is an investment not only in yourself, but in your community as well so you don’t feel isolated and alone.”
Although yoga is at the heart of The Yoga Lounge, the studio offers three distinct types of classes: Restore, Aerial, and Fit. The Restore classes are perfect for those seeking relaxation and stress relief, focusing on gentle movements, deep breathing, and mindfulness. On the other hand, Aerial yoga adds an element of excitement to the practice. Suspended in silk hammocks, participants experience the sensation of weightlessness while engaging in poses that build strength, flexibility, and confidence. “Aerial is like the sprinkles on the cake. It’s the fun part where you get to be playful and go upside down,” Jenn says. But her favorite to teach is one of their Fit classes, Vinyasa. “Regardless of the level or style, each class is intended to challenge everyone in an appropriate and accessible way that’s relative to the individual person. I’ll demonstrate a pose, and students will laugh, saying they’ll never be able to do it. Then, when they finally achieve the pose, I remind them, ‘See? You are capable.’” This sense of personal challenge and accomplishment helps build a community rooted in self-belief and perseverance.
For those unsure of which class to take, Jenn and her studio manager, Sharon, act as advisors for anyone who walks through the doors. They take the time to understand each student’s goals - whether it’s relaxation, injury recovery, a sweat-inducing workout, or breath-focused practice - and recommend the most suitable class. The studio offers events every weekend, such as their aerial sound bath, and a variety of workshops for those who are just getting introduced.
The most difficult part of any yoga journey is taking the first step. Many people hesitate, whether due to self-doubt, fear of the unknown, or concerns about flexibility and fitness levels. Jenn’s advice? Just show up. “You just gotta show up, try it, be open and receptive, and just do it,” she encourages. “All you have to do is walk through the doors, and we’ll take it from there.”
