As a young girl, Rosario Weston always felt a desire to paint and create. As an elementary student, she won her first award for art, an overall school first prize for a painting she created in a day. From then on, she felt a confidence in her ability, but she knew she had so much to learn.
Growing up in Chile, her dad would take her to Chile’s National Fine Arts Museum in Santiago, and she would imagine that with practice, she could get close to the level of the master painters. Rosario had tremendous support from her father, who would always tell her that she was an artist. Thankfully, she believed it.
Inspiration and Curiosity
Weston spent much of her childhood traveling and was highly influenced by experiencing different cultures. Her paintings reflect a life spent observing beauty and diversity.
She says she’s always observed that, “People are beautiful all over the world.”
The mystique of various fashion and cultures captivated her curiosity and eventually led her to consider the influence of society and how people approach their lives. In addition to growing up in Chile, she spent time in Indonesia and North, South and Latin America.
While studying art in college, Weston started painting with oils, but switched to acrylics due to safety concerns when starting her family. She loves experimenting with the various mediums and additives that add to the versatility of acrylics. When her kids were young, she began working with clay and really enjoyed the tactile, messy process.
Weston’s use of color is bold and unique and her compositions are about the tender side of humanity. Her paintings and clay compositions tell a story, often capturing someone’s depth and outlook on life. Her work displays a unique voice and style that is distinctly hers.
“Be yourself,” Weston says. “If you’re an artist, if you’re a dancer, if you’re a musician, the world needs you. The world wouldn’t be as beautiful without creative minds and so we need to embrace that. If you’re creative, be that.”
Dreams for the Future
Painting has been a medicine for Weston during even the most challenging times. Her relationship with painting has evolved from her days as a student learning technique and composition to a relationship of intimacy with her work. She knows what she wants to say through the painting and it is more than technique and composition now.
Weston dreams of reaching a certain level of proficiency with her art as she continues on her artistic journey. She wants to keep challenging herself until she can find the end of her abilities and feels at home here in Colorado Springs. Like many local creatives, she is excited about the growing vibrant and supportive artist community here.
Looking toward the future, she wants Colorado Springs to be known as a place where creators can be supported and collaborate with other creatives.
Weston reflects, “The journey is finite so every minute that you have to devote to your curiosity and the findings that you have along the way, you need to capture those.”
