In Columbia’s tight-knit community, trust is built through relationships, consistency, and quality work. For Garrett Burns, founder of Built By Burns, that foundation was first forged alongside his father on job sites that still stand strong today and strengthened through 10 years at Shindler Homes alongside mentor Phillip Shindler. Now building his own legacy, Burns approaches every project with a guiding question: If it were my home, what would I do?
Burns’s latest showcase project, a sophisticated family man cave, reflects his approach to designing around real life. Rather than a dark, traditional basement, he set out to create a space that feels open, functional, and welcoming for both family and friends. The goal was to build something that could be used every day, not just occasionally.
The result brings together both style and everyday use. A sleek wet bar anchors the entertainment area, while dedicated workout equipment creates a private space to train. The layout flows into a full basketball court and a professional batting cage, turning what could have been unused space into something completely unique. A private bathroom with a tiled shower completes the space, making it easy to spend extended time there without returning to the main house.
“We designed this space to satisfy personal needs while creating a friend and family atmosphere that invites entertaining,” Burns explains. Every element, from lighting to layout, was chosen to make the space easy to use and enjoyable to spend time in.
To make the space comfortable year-round, the project includes two separate HVAC systems with heat pumps. That level of planning ensures the space performs just as well as it looks, no matter the season.
For Burns, a great man cave starts with comfort and purpose. It should be a place where you can unwind, spend time with friends, and actually use the space. Comfortable seating, a stocked bar, quality entertainment, and personal details like art or memorabilia help bring it all together, finished with rich wood details and darker tones that give the space a more grounded, masculine feel.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple. Create a space that people want to be in. One that feels just as natural for a quiet night as it does for hosting friends and family.
The foundation of Burns’s philosophy runs deeper than concrete and steel. Growing up swinging hammers with his dad, he learned early that true craftsmanship isn’t just about building. It is about creating spaces that hold up over time and still feel just as solid years later.
“It’s extremely humbling to drive by projects I built with my dad over 20 years ago that are still standing today,” Burns says. That perspective continues to shape how he approaches every project. Details matter, not just in how something looks on day one, but in how it performs years down the road.
“Built to Last. Built for You.” is more than a tagline. It is a standard he holds himself to on every job. As a boutique builder, Burns stays directly involved from start to finish. Clients are not handed off between departments or left wondering who to call. Instead, they work with him throughout the entire process, building trust along the way.
Understanding how clients actually live is a key part of that experience. During the planning phase, Burns takes time to learn about daily routines, habits, and long-term goals. How they cook, entertain, and move through their home all play a role in the final design.
That approach leads to spaces that feel natural and easy to live in. Layouts are built around real use, not just appearance. Every decision is made with function in mind, ensuring the home works the way it should from day one.
Just as important is how the process feels for the homeowner. Renovations can be disruptive, but Burns and his team prioritize keeping job sites clean, organized, and livable. Areas are sealed off when needed, and the site is cleaned daily so clients can remain comfortable and involved.
For Built By Burns, high-end design and long-term durability go hand in hand. Quality is not treated as an upgrade. It is the baseline. “I’ve always directly correlated high-end design with durability and long-term functionality,” Burns says. That mindset carries through every decision, from materials to construction methods.
Energy efficiency and performance are also central to the way he builds. With advanced insulation, air sealing, efficient HVAC systems, and smart lighting, each project is designed to perform long after construction is complete. These features help reduce monthly costs while improving comfort, air quality, and overall home value.
“A truly great home should work for you, not cost you forever,” Burns explains. It is a simple idea, but one that reflects a long-term mindset. Homes should not become burdens. They should support the people living in them.
After more than 25 years in the industry, Burns continues to be motivated by the opportunity to bring new ideas to life. Design trends evolve, building methods improve, and each project presents a chance to create something unique.
What stands out most, though, is what happens after the project is finished. Many clients stay in touch long after construction ends, sharing photos, inviting him back, and continuing the relationship. Over time, those connections often turn into friendships.
Outside of work, Burns spends as much time as possible with his three children. Whether coaching games, attending events, or simply being present, family remains at the center of everything he does.
It is that same mindset he brings into his work. Thoughtful, consistent, and built with intention. At the end of the day, it is not just about what gets built. It is about creating spaces people truly live in and enjoy for years to come.
