Six Local Cake Artists to Follow on Social Media Now

Nothing completes a party like a gorgeous cake. Magnificent baked beauties are frequently the talk of wedding receptions, birthday bashes, anniversary soirees, and other celebrations in our lives. Fortunately, the Roaring Fork Valley is home to numerous talented cake artists who offer their frosted creations in a variety of flavors, styles, and price points. Here are six of our favorite bakers from New Castle to Aspen. Follow them on Instagram for major cake-spiration and sugary fun.

Glenwood Springs-based Ashley Buerger of Afternoon Delight Bakery creates gorgeous cakes for weddings, parties, and other milestones such as baby's first birthday. She also offers fun party items including fruit tartlets, mini cheesecakes, and other treats. Buerger says she believes special occasion desserts should make a “delicious memory” for our happiest days.

Aspen Mobile Bakery's owner Gabriela Matusova makes colorful, decadent birthday cakes, cupcake bouquets, candy cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, and iced cookies. Using “old world” European techniques, Matusova also creates sumptuous entremet, panna cotta, mille feuille, tiramisu, linzer tarts, and the wonderfully impressive French croquembouche.

Kenzie Houpt is a valley native and the mastermind behind Carbondale's Coppélia Cake Design, with cakes inspired by nature, fine art, contemporary patterns, and unique textures. Houpt’s work includes thoughtful, luxe tiered wedding cakes with unexpected flourishes and accents, plus affordable single tier party cakes for other occasions.

Basalt's d'Ellissious cake studio by Elissa Buckley offers exquisite traditional beauties and wild custom creations ("hamburger" or “shrimp cocktail” cake, anyone?). Buckley, who founded her own cake business in 2009 after working as The Little Nell’s pastry chef, has an eye-popping portfolio of bespoke fondant cakes shaped into dogs, ski hills, cowboy boots, and more.

Luxury meets edible art with Megan Joy Cakes, based in Eagle and serving the Roaring Fork Valley. Owner Megan Clark, who trained at Chicago’s French Pastry School, produces exquisite high-end wedding cakes with intricate details. Her work has been featured in myriad bridal publications including Vogue, Martha Stewart Weddings, and others.

Mountain Whisk Bakery's Samantha Kullas of New Castle makes lovely cakes adorned with fruit and flowers, plus other specialties like donuts, muffins, and bagels. Her gourmet cupcakes have amassed a cult following, and customers can mix-and-match frosting and filling flavors on her website. Watch for Mountain Whisk pop-ups with Bramble & Vine floral studio in Glenwood.
