But you may not have taken the time to pull over to step inside to see what this artist’s destination is all about. After this article, you may do things differently next time.
The Eagan Art House has been a haven for creativity and learning in Eagan since 1997. Originally founded as the Dakota Center for the Arts, it began as a small nonprofit offering art classes for children and pottery workshops for adults. Over time, the Art House joined forces with Eagan Parks & Recreation and has become an integral part of the city’s recreational offerings.
Today, it remains dedicated to visual art education, with programs designed for all ages and skill levels.
A Rich History of Arts Education
The Eagan Art House’s journey from a nonprofit to a city-supported initiative has allowed it to grow substantially over the years. Recreation Program Supervisor Julie Andersen's mission has always been making art accessible and encouraging people to learn, grow, and connect with others. This goal has only strengthened with time. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Art House remained open for pottery students, allowing a few individuals at a time to work on their projects. “It provided a peaceful retreat for our community when people needed it most,” Andersen recalls.
As pandemic restrictions lifted, new programs were designed—art camps, after-school activities, and events like the annual fall art sale joined their roster. With the steady support of the City of Eagan, the Art House continues to thrive and adapt, offering a range of creative outlets like painting, pottery, parent-child activities, and summer camps.
Art Block and Beyond
One of the Art House’s flagship events, Eagan Art Block, is a two-week celebration of creativity held every September. Spanning the square mile around the Art House, this event partners with local landmarks like Caponi Art Park, Eagan Art Festival, and Wescott Library to create a community-focused arts experience. Art Block is about celebrating local talent and inspiring creativity, from a film festival hosted by Eagan TV to performances and interactive exhibits.
Andersen works tirelessly to coordinate this event, leading a team of over 20 staff members, including support staff and teaching artists. Tanya Mozingo, Superintendent of Recreation for Eagan Parks & Recreation and Andersen’s supervisor, says, “I love the sense of community. I love hearing people say, ‘I’m not an artist,’ and then watching them discover they can create something meaningful. It’s about finding a new way to express themselves and leave feeling connected to the community.”
Building Connections and Memories
Both Mozingo and Andersen shared that art at the Eagan Art House is about more than just technique. Many participants come seeking connection, and that’s precisely what they find. Julie notes, “I’ve seen children show their new talents to their parents, who respond with pride and amazement. We meet people where they are, whether it’s their skill level or their interest. It’s great to see how these interactions develop into life-long friendships.”
Mozingo recalls taking a class with her daughter last fall, making ornaments together. “My daughter made a pumpkin, and it was so fun to pull it out this year for seasonal decorations,” she says with a smile. Classes are designed to be accessible, open to residents and non-residents alike, with options for those on a budget. Many courses welcome beginners and require no prior experience, making them an inviting choice for anyone interested in joining.
As Andersen explains, “There is so much you can learn online, but hands-on experience with other people and a skilled artist brings a different level of depth that can’t be replicated.”
Looking to the Future
With excitement building, the Eagan Art House is set to open a new facility in the spring of 2025. This 10,000-square-foot, ADA-accessible building will be the first fossil-fuel-free structure in Eagan, built with sustainable features to support the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship. “We are thrilled to invite the community into this new space, which will be open seven days a week,” Mozingo shares.
