Caring For Fresh Flowers

Flowers have a natural beauty, brighten up a space and evoke feelings of joy

Bringing the beauty of your garden indoors can be a wonderful way to brighten up your home and enjoy nature all year round. One easy way to do this is by snipping off a few blossoms each week and arranging them in a vase. But, to ensure that your flowers stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible, it's important to take a few simple steps.

A CLEAN VASE

First, make sure to use a clean vase and any floral foam, wires, or frogs that you use should be washed in warm, soapy water. It's also a good idea to remove any lower leaves that may come in contact with water inside the vase. Next, carefully trim each flower stem at a 90-degree angle, ideally underwater to keep moisture flowing into the stems. This will help to ensure that the flowers are able to absorb water and stay hydrated.

AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT

It's also important to keep your arrangement out of direct sunlight. The darker and cooler the room, the longer your blossoms will bloom.

WATER ADDITIVES

Additionally, you can use various age-old tricks like adding crushed aspirin, bleach, vinegar, sugar or a penny to the vase to help keep bacteria at bay and extend the life of your flowers. But, the easiest and most effective way is using a packet of flower food, it can be found at your local florist or home improvement store, to add to the water, it will provide all the necessary nutrition for the flowers.

CHANGE AND REPLENISH WATER

Remember that flowers are living things, they will still require water, food, and care even after they are cut. So, it's a good idea to change the water and replenish the flower food every 2-3 days, and recut the stems to keep them fresh and beautiful for many days.

For more ideas on how to freshen up your indoor spaces and bring the beauty of nature into your home, be sure to visit your local nursery. With a little bit of care and attention, you can enjoy a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers in your home all year round.
