Family-owned and operated since 1990, Birmingham Design Studio is celebrating its 30th year in business. With the finest selection of exceptional quality luxury custom designer furniture, top-of-the-line Persian and oriental rugs, custom-made window treatments, custom draperies, beautiful oil paintings, high-end accessories and home decor, as well as a full-service interior design studio, Birmingham Design Studio is truly a complete, one-stop design center– right in your neighborhood.
Located at 808 South Old Woodward Avenue, Birmingham Design Studio’s artfully-curated showroom includes an exclusive collection of continuously-evolving premium pieces from luxury furniture suppliers like Hickory Chair, Hancock and Moore, Pearson, Theodore Alexander and many more. While all the furnishings on display are available for immediate purchase, this is only a small sampling of the countless styles, fabrics and finishes the Birmingham Design Studio team has access to; in fact, they travel the world to handpick unique luxury furniture, oriental rugs and fine art that one simply will not find at big box furniture stores or national retailers, allowing customers to have a one-of-a-kind look at their homes.
“We don’t fill our showroom with the intention of only selling off the floor,” Birmingham Design Studio President Kamran Karimpour explained. “We are not in the business of ‘selling’ anything. Our job is to help our clients find and customize unique pieces that truly reflect their good taste and fit into their lifestyle. While our floor items are available for sale, the real purpose of the showroom is to convey the quality of our pieces while allowing our clientele to actually see finishes and frames in-person.”
Because Birmingham Design Studio specializes in custom furnishings, their choices of styles are far more than any store can show on their floor. They are also not limited by the choices of fabrics that each brand may offer. As a result, they carry all the major fabric and leather brands and can pair them with any piece of upholstery based on what works best for clients.
In addition to furnishing offerings, Birmingham Design Studio is also known for its in-house design team who can help clients as much or as little as they want. Karimpour’s wife, Kristi, and her expert design staff believe that the beauty of interior design is found in the personal connection between an individual and the home they live in; with this in mind, they set out every day to empower clients versus pressuring or imposing upon them their own tastes.
“There is no one definition of beauty when it comes to interior design,” Karimpour said. “No two people are alike– and their homes should be as unique as they are. The true art is to have the interiors truly reflect what’s special about each client. It’s our client’s home, and it must have their signature style all over it. Our job is to share our expertise and guide them in making the right choices. We design with them, for them and within their budget.”
After listening and learning about a client’s needs, wants, lifestyles and design visions, the team uses that information to create a floor plan and find furniture styles and fabrics that would fulfill those wishes. Karimpour said it takes a lot of homework and going back and forth to find just the right pieces, but once a plan is put together and presented to a client, it is up to them on how fast or slow to move forward, ensuring that the end result would be the beautiful rooms they were envisioning regardless.
Karimpour always had a passion for beautiful hand-knotted rugs and wanted to share it with people who appreciated this woven art. In 1990, he opened his first store in Birmingham called Woven Treasures Oriental Rugs, and many of the clients there started their projects by first selecting one of the unique rugs and then worked from the floor up to furnish the room.
“We often found ourselves helping them find unique furnishings and fabrics that complemented their rugs and lifestyle, leading us to eventually expand into custom furniture and full-service interior design services,” Karimpour explained. “We have always loved the close-knit community environment that Birmingham offers. The curated collection of boutiques, restaurants, shops and services has been a wonderful place to root our business.”
Over the years, Birmingham Design Studio has also partnered with complimentary industries, such as custom kitchen builders and designers, licensed electricians, professional painters, granite wholesalers, custom wood workers and home builders and architects to “take the headache” out of the remodeling, customizing, furnishing and decorating process for clients.

“When the client comes into our store, we are welcoming them into our home,” Karimpour said. “With everything currently going on in the world, ‘home’ has become more and more important. It has become a workplace, gather place and a safe haven. We strive to embellish clients’ comfort– and try to have a little fun while doing it!”
