From Aug. 1 through Sept. 6, the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center (MACC), in conjunction with the Park West Foundation, is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with its 8th Annual Veterans Art Exhibition titled ‘For the Love of Liberty.’ The elaborate display features paintings by renowned abstract artist Tim Yanke as well as ornate jackets created by legendary fashion designer of the stars, Manuel Cuevas.
All of Tim’s featured paintings feature creative takes on the American flag. He was inspired to create his American flag series after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Known as “Yanke Doodles,” the paintings feature a blend of alternate colors that represent different cultures, communities and events in America. Several of the paintings incorporate military service ribbon themes as a tribute to the nation’s veterans.
Manuel’s contributions to the exhibition are a series of custom designed jackets depicting events, locations and images that are representative of each state. Over time, he created jackets for each of the 50 U.S. states, but the current display at the MACC concentrates on jackets representing the original 13 colonies.
In addition to the works of Tim and Manuel, the exhibition also includes contributions by local artist Don Olea which depict key moments in the founding of America. There are also several pieces of art created by veterans who participate in the MACC’s “Between the Lines” healing arts program.
The exhibition kick off began with a special artist VIP meet and greet event with the artists to celebrate the grand opening of the exhibition on Saturday night, Aug. 1. The following evening, the celebration continued at Bagsby Ranch with the annual Boots & BBQ fundraiser that supports “Between the Lines.”
This year’s Boots & BBQ event featured a buffet dinner, a musical performance by Marine Corps veteran and singer/songwriter Sal Gonzalez, and presentations by Quilts of Valor representatives. In addition, Dr. Michael Hamilton of Label 22 presented the keynote address.

Since 2017, the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) has been the hub for all things art in the City by the Lake. Located in a historic antebellum mansion, the MACC features year-round displays of visual art by talented painters, sculptors, crafters and other artists ranging from local school children through world renowned creatives.
In recent years, the MACC has put on multiple exhibitions which have drawn attention from art aficionados around the country. Exhibits such as paintings by Grammy award winner Steve Wariner, photos by country music star William Lee Golden and sculptures by Pablo Picasso have helped elevate the MACC’s status in the eyes of art aficionados.
Along with showcasing famous artists and artisans, the MACC also provides opportunities to promote the growing community of local artists and students in Sumner County. Popular events include the annual Veterans Art Exhibition and James B. Hawkins Sumner County Student Art Show.
In recent years, the MACC has expanded its focus beyond the visual arts to include a wide variety of performance events, building upon Hendersonville’s rich musical heritage.
