Classy Closets

Practical tips for elevating the spaces in your home

Spring is just around the corner and for some that means fresh blooms and brighter days and for others: a time to declutter and get organized.

If you fall in the latter, Debbie Knutson of Classy Closets Las Vegas, says there is one space you should not ignore when it comes to elevating your home: your closets.

“Your home reflects your style, so should your closets and cabinetry,” Debbie said. “Some people want a special place for everything; others just need more storage.” The problem with this, she added, is that a lot of homes are not designed to match these needs and preferences. “Most homes do not have enough built-in storage. When storage does exist, it’s often inefficient, generic, and poorly laid out.”

Inadequate storage, compounded by poor design, is the cause for many of the challenges Debbie and the Classy Closets team help their clients tackle. With this dilemma, “over time, you end up with overflowing closets, a cluttered pantry, a garage that does not fit your car and an office that does not work for you,” she explained. The right closet and use of space can completely transform your home–think a new home at the same address,” Debbie said.

To start, keep it simple. Walk-in closets are popular because they offer additional space, but Debbie warned they can “quickly become cluttered without structure.” Assess your individual needs by clearing out your closet completely. “Purge and donate.” This crucial first step in the process allows you to get a clear picture of how to move forward.

“Categorize to see how much space you need,” Debbie recommended. “Sort shoes by style–sneakers, boots, sandals, dress shoes and high heels. Group tops, pants, dresses and jackets and separate into seasons and colors.” A season-rotating closet is a great method for eliminating clutter. “This prevents overcrowding and keeps your closet feeling fresh and manageable all year.”

One big advantage to keeping an organized system? “You will not hear yourself saying, ‘Oh I forgot I had that’ as often,” she quipped. If you don’t already have them, Debbie also suggests adding full-length mirrors to doors to refresh the existing space and “create an elevated look.” The light, she said, “reflects off the mirror and brightens the closet, making it feel more spacious with function and style.”

Even seemingly minor additions can make a big difference. “Upgraded doors, moldings, mirrors, lighting, belt and tie racks, valet rods, scarf racks. . .,” are just a few of the hardware and accessories that Debbie recommends for a well-organized, stylish closet. For timeless appeal, choose neutral colors, she added.

Another thing to consider is that structurally organized closet spaces help considerably with resale value. “When the closets look tidy and clean, it shows a home that is well-maintained,” explained Debbie, noting that this appeals to home buyers on an emotional level because adequate storage is an attractive amenity. “Even though it does not add square footage to the house, it adds square footage to the storage efficiency which is very desirable to a new home buyer.”

Classy Closets can help at any point in the upgrading process, offering “a wide range of colors, textures, hardware and door style to compliment any decor.” The cabinet maker’s tagline is Life. Organized., but Debbie said it’s about more than that. “It’s transforming your daily experience, bringing order, beauty and peace of mind into your life and throughout your home.”

Closets are their specialty, but the Classy Closets team is ready to turn around any space needing attention, such as pantries, home offices, wall units, utility rooms, garage cabinets or wall beds. “We will help you create a home that feels balanced and effortless without having to go through the expense and hassle of moving, or having to deal with the mess and schedule of a remodel which can take weeks or even months,” said Debbie

Most Classy Closets installations are completed in a fraction of that time: one day. While needs may vary, “no two homes or families are alike,” Debbie and the Classy Closets designers are dedicated to every client’s vision through a collaborative process. “Our designers will come out and meet with you to discuss your wants and needs, to work with you to design a layout with both function and style.”

A Classy Closet is fundamentally different because it is custom designed from start to finish. “There is not a one-size-fits-all solution,” Debbie said. Every closet or storage system perfectly aligns with a home’s dimensions, “ensuring a perfect fit.”

No matter which direction you take to accomplish your organizational goals, remember the end goal is to truly enjoy the space you have created. “When everything has its place, the whole room feels calm and organized.”

“Your home reflects your style, so should your closets and cabinetry.”
