Clyde May's Whiskey Heritage

Alabama Style Whiskey is here to stay

Clyde May's whiskey is more than just a brand of spirits. It embodies the resilience, determination, and unwavering character of its founder, Clyde May. Born and raised in Alabama during the Great Depression, Clyde's journey from a young boy raised by his grandparents to a decorated war veteran and renowned moonshiner is the stuff of legends. Today, his legacy lives on through his family, as they continue to craft the finest spirits and expand the brand's reach. With a new distillery on the horizon, Clyde May's whiskey is set to make an even greater impact on the local economy and whiskey enthusiasts worldwide.

Clyde May's story begins in the heart of Alabama, a place known for its rugged way of life during the great depression and seat to some of the most influential people in our nation's history, including Clyde May.  Raised by his grandparents after the passing of his mother at the tender young age of 5, Clyde learned the values of strength, grit, and character at a young age. During the Great Depression, these qualities were vital for survival, and they became the foundation upon which Clyde built his life, family, and his whiskey.

In World War II, Clyde served his country in the Army's 77th Infantry Division. Leading a 12-rifleman squad, he displayed remarkable bravery and courage, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. However, fate intervened when Clyde was wounded in battle, forcing him to return home. It was during this time that he began his family and honed his skills as a moonshiner.

Clyde May's reputation as a moonshiner quickly spread throughout the region. Known for his commitment to quality, he never sold a bottle of moonshine legally in his life. Instead, his spirits were cherished and sought after by his neighbors, who recognized his craftsmanship and dedication. Clyde's knowledge and techniques were passed down through the generations, from his children to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those generations have worked diligently to make Clyde’s legacy a legend.

In 2001, Clyde's son Kenny May made the bold decision to bring the family's whiskey brand into the legal market. With a vision to share Clyde's legacy with the world, Kenny transformed the family's moonshine operation into a legitimate business. Today, Clyde May's whiskey is distributed across the United States and in countries abroad, captivating whiskey enthusiasts with its rich history and exceptional taste.

As Clyde May's whiskey continues to gain recognition and popularity, the brand is embarking on an exciting new chapter. A state-of-the-art distillery is currently under construction in Troy, Alabama, with plans to open its doors in the late summer or early fall of this year. This expansion not only signifies the brand's commitment to quality and innovation but also brings economic growth to the local community.

The new distillery will create job opportunities and contribute to the region's economy, carrying forward Clyde May's legacy of hard work and perseverance. It will also serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of Alabama and its vibrant whiskey-making tradition.

Clyde May's whiskey is more than just a drink; it is a testament to the indomitable spirit of its founder and the generations that followed. From humble beginnings in Alabama to becoming a renowned whiskey brand, Clyde May's legacy lives on through the commitment to quality and craftsmanship that defines the brand. As the new distillery takes shape in Troy, Alabama, the future looks promising for Clyde May's whiskey, carrying forward the traditions of true grit and determination that made it a beloved name in the world of spirits.
