For owners Narendrakumar Patel and Madhurika Patel, the boutique is much more than a fashion store. It's the unexpected second chapter of a family story.
When the recession closed Narendrakumar’s Chrysler plant in 2010, he found himself wondering what came next. Drawing on their background in business and sales, the couple began selling Indian clothing from home before opening Sanskriti Fashion in 2011.
The very name, Sanskriti, means "culture" – a fitting reflection of their mission to share the beauty and traditions of India with everyone who walks through the door.
They chose Troy as the perfect location to serve metro Detroit's growing Indian community. Over the past 15 years, the family business has become a destination for customers across the community.
The Patels now work directly with manufacturers throughout India, carefully selecting new collections several times a year so customers always find the latest styles. Every color, pattern and silhouette is chosen by hand, creating a collection for men, women and children that ranges from everyday wear to breathtaking wedding attire.
They've even outfitted entire bridal parties, taking custom measurements before garments are specially crafted in India.
"We offer what people will love and what they can afford," Narendrakumar says. While the boutique carries exquisite handcrafted silk saris valued at more than $1,000, most shoppers discover beautiful pieces in the $200 to $500 range.
Fashion, they say, is deeply connected to life's biggest celebrations. Different styles are chosen for weddings, festivals like Diwali and Navratri, family gatherings and everyday occasions, giving customers countless ways to express their personalities while honoring tradition.
Every garment is finished with another signature touch: complimentary in-house alterations. The goal isn't simply selling clothing; it's making sure every customer leaves looking and feeling their best.
On more than one occasion, Narendrakumar and Madhurika have stayed late into the evening to finish last-minute alterations for customers leaving for weddings the next morning.
One misconception the family is happy to dispel? You don't have to be Indian to enjoy Indian fashion.
"Anybody can wear it," Narendrakumar says with a smile. "Even if you're not Indian, we'll help you find something you'll love to wear."
That welcoming spirit may be the boutique's greatest accessory. Many customers have been shopping there for more than 15 years. Some now bring their children and grandchildren. Before long, regulars stop calling the owners by name.
"They call us Auntie and Uncle," Narendrakumar says proudly.
It's a simple title that speaks volumes. At Sanskriti Fashion, style isn't just about beautiful clothing. It's about welcoming you into a culture.
